CV Joint?

My mechanic showed me a damaged CV boot on my C320 4Matic; told me I might as well order the CV joint, or "the whole axle", as he referred to it (he's great in that he allows me to order my own parts and bring them in). I can't seem to find a CV joint for the drivers side front anywhere online; is there another name for it? I've all but given up trying to find one place to order all the parts I currently need for this car, which include:
Front rotors
Front ceramic pads, pref. Akebono
brake pad wear sensor

I just bought a sensor and rear Akebonos for my CLK from RMEuropean, but they don't have fronts. TireRack has the best price on Akebono fronts - even with a shipping charge - but rotors are high and they don't have the sensor.

Eff, in the past, I have always taken my CVs to specialist places. Sounds like your mechanic wants to take it off, then do just that. Then he makes a markup from outsourcing the work and reinstalling. Usually, you can simply have the joints cleaned, repacked with grease, and off you go.

so emrll, would I then need to buy just a CV boot? I don't think it's that he'd outsource anything, I think it's just the "replace instead of repair" culture he lives in. Y'know, it wasn't so long ago that the guys on Car Talk would tell callers that their mechanic should repair their power steering pump or alternator, instead of replacing them. Nobody would do that today (heck, they wouldn't do it then!); they just return the bad one for a core charge rebate. I did see the boots available, I think......

Whoa, I now realize you have a 4matic, and this means you have CVs up front? I'm giving advice without having ever seen or worked on a 4matic. So use my advice sparingly.

Inspect the polished surfaces, insure there is no play once the CV is pulled off the hub. Clean in a solvent, repack with copious amounts of appropriate grease, new boot, new tie down. Viola. I think you'll also want a new hub nut and axle to dif seal. If you have not had your diff fluid changed, it is a good time to get that done as well.
