m271 Kleemann headers PROBLEMS!
Lets start off by saying that I am very happy with the product and have been for about a year now, but I have come to some problems that are easy to fix but just a pain to get done. It came time for my first smog check and of course the first thing to note is of course they are not C.A.R.B. legal so they failed the visual inspection to start things off. I now am forced to switch out back to the stock header just to pass smog
Not too much of big deal but just a waste of time. When the shop went ahead to remove the header they stumbled upon a little flaw with the product.

The header seemed to have either warped or there was already a preexisting unevenness with the face of the header that bolts to the block. As you can see from the pictures of the header and the header gasket there is a clear leak at one of the heads. To fix this I apparently have to get it machined to get it flush once again to get rid of the leak.
So you guys with the m271 Kleemann header, when you guys go in for your smog I hope you guys take what I have posted into account. This would be so much easier if the product was C.A.R.B. legal
Maybe Cory can mail us the necessary kleemann plate with authorization numbers so we can weld them onto the header

I couldn't really tell you if you would pass because I never got passed the visual. I would say yes as long as there are no leaks of any kind

Not to worry though, as soon as I pass smog I'm slapping the b*tch back on

sorry to hear the trouble!
i haven't had any problems with my headers (thank god)... and am lucky that virginia doesn't do smog checks.
i recently got a safety inspection to renew my stickers and they didn't say/notice a thing. however, they scratched my front window tint and threatened to take my sticker back. but it was too late since they noticed after they passed me. i guess i'll have to find a different place next year.
keep us posted on the progress. how much was the labor to switch the headers?

That’s too bad about your leaks. WTH?
My otherwise diligent smog guy never noticed its aftermarket exhaust manifolds. Tailpipe blew almost as clean as a springtime breeze anyway.
Perhaps that bottle of his preferred beverage received during each Christmas holiday season improved his vision.
More than one enterprising member (M111 pictured) has fit a heat shield on theirs to help ensure compliance..

Splinter beat me to it. I would have left and gone to a different smog shop. However, in your case, you did need to get the warpage solved. A good machine shop will get it out the warpage, no problem.
I think the creative member said the shield was from some asian car.

How are you bolting up your stock manifold? didn't you have to cut your stock downpipe and clamp it to the Kleemann pc?

Before I go and do that though, do you have any options to my predicament?

congrats I guess lol
Just was wondering what others were doing. Did Group5 weld the stock pcs back? or rig some kind of clamp like how it was attach to the Kleemann down pipe.
I didn't want to cut mine and had an extra MB pentagon or so shape flange so I had a muffler shop make the pipe extend to the middle of the car and weld everything up that way it all unbolts and my stock bolts right back.

That was alos my problem when i got the headers, have gone to 10 diff. parts shops to find a gasket that would fit.
Kleemann told me that the gasket wasnt neccesary (wow dont know if i wrote this word correct
![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
So if you gonna instal the headers again, look for a gasket between headers and cat.

Thats the known "problem" , they forgot to send you the ring/gasket between headers and cat?? Like in this picture?

Kleemann told me that the gasket wasnt neccesary (wow dont know if i wrote this word correct
) because it will seal itself when the exhaust is getting on high temperature. WRONG!!!
So if you gonna instal the headers again, look for a gasket between headers and cat.

But about that pic. . . why does that header have a Kleemann plate welded on it and mine doesn't??? If I had that, this shiz might be C.A.R.B. legal

Also the connection to your cylinder, the 4 pipes are connected by yours, by mine they are not connected... all had to do with production i think... I think Kleemann dont produce them itself, but lett another company produce it.
