Standard Speaker Sizes

Can someone please help me, I'm upgrading my sound system but I don't know what the standard speaker sizes in the doors are, can someone help?

Also can you tell me if I only need the face plate adapter for the Head unit to hook up my Kenwood HU.

Thanks

Neil

I just bought my new C320 today! So I was checking into this for us any any others interested, as I own a stereo shop here in Florida =)

Metra, a manufacturer of installation kits and accessories for car audio shows the following info:

Front speakers: 6.5" (180mm)
Rear speakers: 5.25" (130mm)

I have not verified this yet, but I will later this week, and will post more exact, verified info when I do the swap-out.

Also, I do know that you WILL need an installation kit, part number 99-8710 (by Metra). This kit allows installation of TWO standard DIN sized units, or you can choose to install only one head unit, along with the DIN sized pocket which is included.

Here is a link with an image of the new installation kit:

Hope this helps!

I believe the Standard speaker sizes are the same as for the BOSE upgrade because they use the same mounts, except there are fewer speakers in the standard system. You can do a search of this forum on terms "Bose Speaker Sizes." This is thoroughly documented here. I could do it for you, but then you wouldn't have a need to learn how yourself.

Oh, heck, I'm such a softie...

You will need the Metra mounting kit as well as a VW wiring harness to map the Kenwood HU's wiring with the Mercedes stock wiring. For some reason the VW wiring harness (sorry I don't have a specific part number) is what works.

Here's a thread with some pics of my system:

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=22332

I will warn you -- putting a system into the C230K is not anywhere as easy as putting one into a more prolific model like a Civic. The Benz just doesn't have very much aftermarket support, unfortunately. My best advice is to either know what you're doing or to find the most reliable shop around to do the job.

The install wont be a problem... I own and am head installer at a car audio shop here in Naples, Florida... we build a lot of show cars that you see in the magazines and such. This is my other car:

More info on it HERE

We work on a lot of Mercedes, but this is the first time I have personally owned one. I am loving it! Selling the car shown above now =) Originally planned on keeping it, but the Benz outclasses it so much LOL

Not going as extreme with the Mercedes system, but plan on flushing a Diamond TDX or M6 10" sub in a fiberglass spare tire well enclosure, so it is out of sight and I can still use the trunk.

Oops, session, I meant to ask, have you found a steering wheel control adaptor that works with the C class yet? I am still searching. Neither PAC nor SoundGate seem to support the Mercedes protocol =(

I guess when I change out the deck I will check to see what kind of system it is, maybe I can make something for it. Havent had anyone request steering wheel controls for their aftermarket radio on one of these yet.

Also trying to figure out how I am going to interface a remote start with the smart key. Ugh! This ones going to be tuff, if not totally impossible. Well NOTHINGS impossible hehe.

When I bought my system there was no adapter available for the steering wheel controls. I've since heard rumors that there exists an Alpine D2B fiber adapter but I have no confirmation on that at all.

As far as remote start, I'd go ahead and say it's impossible. The smart key generates a rolling code to authenticate itself with the ignition every time you put the key in. Unless you can find a remote starter that bypasses this, you're out of luck.

I wish I could've afforded to put a sub in the spare well using a fiberglass enclosure. I just couldn't swing the cash at the time.

Wow rolling codes on a key, thats very VERY nice.

Hmmm I have been able to bypass similar, but not quite as advanced systems, by mounting a spare key's trransponder, along with an extension of the receiver antenna. The remote start only "patches" in this transponder when you try to remote start the vehicle. All other times, the vehicles factory security is retained.

I am thinking something may be possible if I shell out the bucks to get an additional key programmed to my car, and then use it in a similar fashion. Id have to hide it very well, as there is no metal "key" to chop off on these!

I am wondering how it transmits the signal to the car... looks like an IR window on the end of the key to me but I havent really looked into it yet. If thats the case we should be able to add an additional IR receiver to pick up the signal from the extra key when the remote starter is activated. But this is all assuming it is IR. Actually if its RF like a honda or ford, it would be much easier.

When I figure it out, Ill post the info on here. I contacted DEI already and they have nothing for it yet, in the way of interfaces.

There's a company in UK who make after market steering control adapters to order. I'm still waiting for a reply to see if they can assist

Thanks for all your input

Synergy, the key is a proximity type. The IR is only for the window control outside the car. Look for the little IR receivers on the door handles. The starter part of the key is one of those inductive proximity chips located in the key base.

The steering wheel controls are CANBUS not D2B. The Alpine adaptor has been on sale in Europe for a while. It is harder to find here, but it is supposed to be available. At least that is what the local Alpine dealer said, but he hasn't needed to order one yet.

Update on install, dam spacers couldn't get any for speaker fixing so i mullered the old speackers for there rings and they went straight in.

I fitted the eq under the head unit and the 10 disc i'm still playing with.

I have just put my sub box in with my 2 12's, I made the box so it sat flush againist the back seat and mounted the amps on top of the box, and i still can get my spare out result.

Will post pic's soon.

Thanks again for all your help with the speaker sizes etc and how to remove the door panels and head unit.
