Damn potholes

Damn it. I always go home from work on surface streets because it is shorter and in the afternoon just as quick. Last night, I was later than usual and decided to take the freeway. While changing lanes to the right to get to my exit from behind a semi, I hit an enormous pothole with the left front wheel. Couldn't avoid it, too little warning. Now the whole car shakes. Not a lot, but it is enough to be very uncomfortable.

I am due for Service A, so I called the service department and can take it in Tuesday morning. I also need to get the roof lubed and a squeak in the passenger headrest fixed. I'll try to get them to remove the "NO PHONE" message and set navigation to present. I wonder what kind of loaner I'll get.

That sucks Lynn. Hopefully you didn't bend a rim or anything and only need an alignment. I have heard that some models are very easy to get out of alignment with just a slight hit of a curb or something. This especially applies to the E-class, but I'm not sure about the C. Good luck.

If the wheel is bent it is some consolation that I still had the snow tires on. so it wil be a $125 Mille Miglia that is bent and not a $300 C7 wheel. And wouldn't you know it, they filled all the pothole in that stretch of road today.

What kind of Mille Miglia? I still want to get some Evo5's in 18", but I'd rather get a bike this spring instead.

How comfortable is the riding position on the GSX-R? I love the look of those, but right now I am leaning towards a Yamaha YZF600. I would also like an R6 for the looks, but I don't want anything too uncomfortable. Also, this is my first bike. I just learned to ride last summer, so I probably shouldn't start with anything too fast. Any suggestions?

Lynn, what size is ithe wheel? I have a set of M11-2's (silver not polished) in 16"x7.5" that came off my 1999 Passat. I understand that they will fit the C-class MB if you have the correct hub centering rings. They are 5 x 112 ET35. I had used them on my car for winter rubber two. If you can use one I would be willing to sell you one ...cheap!

I'll keep that in mind. I have to have the wheel checked to see if it is bent. My wheels are the same size as yours.

Get the YZF if price is a primary concern, but get a CBR600 F4 if you want a great all around bike. You will be much happier with the CBR after a few months.

hey lynn...u should get the ur local state transportation agency to repay u on the crapped up wheel. which wheel did u hit? just the left front wheel? if highway speed, the rear may have gone thru it too. it sounds like ur tire didn't break, but the rim may still have been hit. look for any tire buldges, on the inside tire wall too. ur car should not be shaking if nothing was damaged.

if u get a chance, take a picture of the pothole on the freeway...may be hard on the freeway. but if there's a wide enough shoulder, u can go by it early sat or sun and take a couple of pics as evidence. also, when u take it to a tire shop, or dealer, make sure the check if the wheel is out of round, and not simply if it's out of balance. and keep all receipts. u can definitely file against the transportation agency (in ca, it's caltran). not the local city, that works only for local roads.

Thanks for the advice, Steve S. It is too late to get a picture of the pothole. It was filled the next day.

When you get that wheel checked, go to a dealer that has a Hunter GSP9700 wheel balancer. You can locate 9700 dealers from Hunter's Website . Good luck...

On my second tire because of the damned potholes in my area both from construction and from the winter.

I took the snow tires and Mille Miglia wheels off and put the C7's back on. The vibration is gone. So I guess at least one of the Mille Miglia wheels is bent. Better those than the C7's. I'll still get the suspension aligned, and get the wheels checked when I get the time.

The strange thing to me is that the vibration is most noticeable through the seat. I can also feel it in the shifter, but I feel very little vibration in the steering.

Sounds like it was one of the rear tires.

That's what I'm thinking. What would be weird about that is the front hit that hole so hard and the rear is bent or bent worse. I'll have both of them check. I checked the site Bos posted and there are at least three places with those Hunter machines within 6 miles of me.

Pot holes are horrible in the UK, There every where and they recked my wheels so each time it happens I call spit and polish out they come and fix the marks. I pay £150 a year road tax for what, nothing.

Say what? Ive been in England numerous times, and the roads in general are better than what you'll find in most northern states. You want to see pot holes, come to Wisconsin, Illinois, or Michigan in spring. You may loose your car in one. Short people, Children and Pets have been know to go missing, only to found trapped in the bottom of our potholes

The street in front of the building I used to work in collapsed one day into a massive sinkhole that took most of the road, a few cars, and nearly the building. Funny thing is, it started out as a few depressions, then an area of pot holes where the broken asphalt cracked and was knocked loose. Days later it was a huge hole in the ground!

And folks wonder why SUV's are popular up here
