first problem on my coupe!
Just call your dealer. At this point, the techs there could probably change fuel sensors in their sleep.

Just go to the dealer, they can fix it.
Sorry you're having problems.

Problems might also be related to gas with 10% or more ethanol. The ethanol penetrates fuel system plastics, which can lead to component failure. Here is a link to a Toyota presentation. Ethanol has apparently been a reliability issue for the fuel sender units in Saabs. I wonder if something like this might be going on?
Recurring problems with fuel gauge senders in Canada have been linked to formulation issues at gasoline refineries. Here is a link to a recent advisory from Shell Canada. The same type of failure last year was attributed to an additive.

MTBE has also been known to screw up fuel systems.
For those not quite following this exchange, MTBE and ethanol are added to gasoline to promote more complete combustion, so reducing emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, particulates, and other air pollutants that are precursors of smog.
I've heard that too, but MTBE has been used widely in Europe, and in higher concentrations than in North America, so one would expect MB's fuel system to be able to cope with it. I think the current phase-out date for MTBE in California gasoline is Jan 2004. Unhappily as far as I'm concerned, the plan is to add ethanol instead of MTBE, because California did not get an exemption from EPA's fuel oxygenate requirement. Ethanol comes with its own set of problems, one of which I mentioned above.
