CA Smog Check Error Problem

Hello:

My Dad has a 2002 c240, and we are required to get it smog checked.

He went to the smog check place and they hooked it up and said there was an error reading that would not allow him to check the smog.

He asked if the battery had been disconnected recently. My dad replied yes since he is having the seat control battery drain problem.

The smog technician said it happens before go drive around 20 miles and come back and it should work.

My Dad drives around for 20 miles and comes back. Still the same problem. The technician says it happens to japanese cars as well once the battery has been disconnected. But usually resets in 15 miles. So, thats why he said to drive 20 miles.

The technician says maybe its different with german cars. drive around for another 30 miles, my dad does this and comes back. still same problem.

the technician says drive around in the city not freeway for 45 miles and come back tomorrow (thursday).

before my dad acutally does this, has anyone heard of this problem? sounds really strange to me.

Thank you for any replies.

San
