Yeah in that budget your likely going to be in a 230k, but those are still really fun cars, the Kompressor 4 is a fun engine and has a lot of modding potential.
Just stay up on your service and be careful, because of course, anytime a small engine is super/turbocharged your likely to have more problems as you get into higher miles.
And if i was you, i would search high and low and just hold out if you have to to get at least a 2004.5+, facelift aside, the suspension is 10x better imo.

My 19 year old son just scored an '02 C230 with 56K for really reasonable money. The only issue I found with the car is that the CD will fully eject from the player. Any comments?

I am a bit confused. Are you saying the CD won't eject when it is supposed to eject, or are you saying it ejects when it is not supposed to eject? In either case, the problem is with the drive mechanism in the stereo head. You can try to repair this, but you will probably end up replacing the head unit. You might check with Crutchfield for recommendations on what fits the car.

Out Of Control!!
Your son probably has the same problem I had with the cd changer - a warped magazine. He'll probably have to wedge the magazine out, then get a new magazine from ebay.
Assuming that he's got the OEM unit, and not an aftermarket, like AW suggested.
