Engine Cover m271, where to buy?

My car is either leaking oil or burning oil so the "Add 1.0 qt oil" message came up while driving on the fwy. Had some spare oil in the car so i stopped at the gas station and couldnt get the oil filler cap off (no grip) so i took the plastic engine cover off so i could get a better grip before filling.

either i got really strong (been hittin the gym lately) or its cheap german plastic but part of it snapped off in the middle.. argggh.

anyone know a reputable place i can buy some used parts online? tried ebay, cl and google but no help there.

any suggestions appreciated.

technically speaking the plastic cover isnt even necessary right? i can just drive along w/o it if i wanted right?

It's not an expensive part. Just head to the dealer.

Yuppers, the oil filler cap on my m271 is very tight too. I usually have to get some plyers to get it off...

It is a pain in the *** to open the oil cap after it sits in there for a while.

I did the same thing...popped the engine cover off and broke it!
So, i'm thinking about cover the whole thing with carbon-fiber sticker...we'll see!
But, you don't really need the engine cover...it's just there to make the engine look nicer.

BTW, I use an AMG oil cap now...it has a build in plastic bolt on top...way easier to open!

Get the newer model cover plus the mounting seats (small rubber squares). They redesigned it to be much easier to remove. In my case, I was breaking each of the plastic posts on the bottom of the cover until I ran out of posts.

New one looks much nicer IMO. It's all black with a chrome MB logo in the middle as opposed to black with a silver-grey stripe of plastic down the middle.

Placed order with dealer, said it should be in by Friday.

Said that its a common problem for the m271. He mentioned his service guys break them all the time (due to bad design).

Mentioned that MBUSA doesnt have the old style cover that came with the 05 m271. They only have the new "star only" version with the redesigned clips.

For all that broke it, were not crazy! It was just MB's genius german engineering!

Could you please provide us with a PN for the engine cover when you've got it? I'd appreciate it since I need to replace mine as well. Nothing's wrong with mine other than a little fading and wear/tear. Thank you!

I'm not sure myself aside from the forums of where to get "used" parts. However, I would recommend Autohausaz, or autopartswarehouse for replacement parts. I've had excellent customer service from the above; mainly autohausaz. they've had the best prices around from my experience.

I can attest to that. The dealer broke my engine cover and ended up replacing it with the new version.

And yes, the damn oil cap is a pain.

well i called the dealership again today to see if the part came in.

sure did. but i wont be purchasing it from them.

reason being is that they orignally quoted me 85.xx over the phone, said we'll place the order w/o deposit should be in friday.

called, said it was in, but they decided the price should be 150.xx now.

talked a little bit to reasoning why i was quote one price and not the other... got the runaround. i refuse to pay 150.xx for a piece of plastic.

i'm gonna go shop around and see if i can find a better deal. i'll keep you guys posted on the PN number whenever i get it.

maybe NL Pamg can pop open the bottom of his and find it?
