I know this thread is a little older now...but, Star Rider, did you ever install the HID's in your frosties?? How'd they come out? I was looking into doing the same thing but worried it will look terrible with the light pattern you guys were talking about

 

In OEM applications companies usually use D2S types of HID Bulbs for Projectors and D2R type bulbs for Reflectors. The D2R bulb has a little shield wrapped around the bulb to block the light from hitting the wrong parts of the reflector and eliminates glare. Cars like the old Lexus ES and Acura TL that had HIDs in reflector housings used D2R bulbs. You can try looking for a retrofit HID kit that has the bulb base that fits ur headlight housing but has that little shield on the actual bulb. I dont know if those types of bulbs are made in aftermarket retrofit kits but the proper bulbs to use with reflectors is a D2R type of bulb with the shield to give u a cutoff.

sirmoss this is a pretty old post but if your looking to fit a d2r bulb in your car, you can do this by buying a h7 to d2r adapter and then buy the d2r bulbs. I doubt it will be perfect but I'm pretty sure it will reduce some of the glare. The housing is still not designed for the exact spot where the flame of the bulb is located.

 

yea i installed HIDS on my headlights check my pictures :} i installed 8000K and soon im gonna change the parking lights to light blue and the fogs to 8000k

 

I have not because I was gun shy with all the issues people seem to get with the electronic errors. I will probably do it soon though since I installed 35w HID's into the driving lights with no errors so far.

 

If you're going to run HIDs then you're going to need projectors no matter what year your stock OEM headlights are unless of course you have the lighting package. My 07s scattered light everywhere with terrible cutoffs and created glare for oncoming traffic. Recently had DEPOs installed and the beam pattern and cutoff is much better.

Not all HID lights use a projector style light housings, but yeah, on these cars they do. So to do it correctly, you should use a projector housing. The ones you linked to don't look to bad to me, but I am no expert on them either. I'm sure someone here that has experience will chime in. If you do get them, report back on the build quality.

 

Not bad, you can always go DEPOs too. Gary@Suvneer sells them 270$ shipped. D2S or H7.
Had them installed this weekend and they work great.

Pretty much, all the wiring and assembly of the headlights was straightforward. Havn't really gotten a chance to take night pics yet but will do so when I get a chance.

 

can you please take night pictures asap lol. Because i'm definitely goin to go projectors with hids. Just dont know which route. I got quoted for 500 dollars with everything (projectors+shroud+lens)) plus the cost of the depo projectors. from a local place

 

Those look pretty Legit. Try messaging the seller and make sure they are real quality products.

 

Thanks for the input but Im gonna run a D2S Philips kit since I have the stock halogen projectors that already have cutoff shields. So i dont need another shield on the bulb like D2Rs have. I ll probably do a lense swap too but im currently trying to do a lens swap on another projector and its scattering the light violently. Untill I get the lens issues resolved im gonna put my C class HID upgrade on hold.

 

Actually Im gonna ask around for the C Class. Dont know if I should do a PlugnPlay H7 HID kit or try to make the D2S HID kti fit on the OEM halogen Projectors. Dont wanna get HID projectors since its a lease. Any Ideas?

 

the only advantage of making it a d2s is that you can buy high quality bulbs. You cant really get a perfectly aligned bulb on a rebased bulb, but some actually aren't too bad. Since you car has projectors already, you wont have to worry about glare as long as the bulbs aren't terribly aligned. If your very picky about getting the best performance then use the d2s adapter and buy a phillips or morimoto bulb, if not, the h7 will still be decent.

 

i own a 99 E320 which came only with fluted headlights, both halogen and HID.
OEM projector headlights did not become available for another 3 years so I had
very limited options. but with some coaching from the forum, I bought a halogen
based, Depo projector and modified it. took out the Depo projector and chucked it.
in its place i fitted in E55 bixenon projector. the results were very satisfying.

the first headlight assembly took me about 2 weeks of slow, methodical retro-
fitting. the second headlight took me about 48 hrs. i did a handful more for
friends and family, all 210/E320s.

i'm not that gifted but i was able to put together fully functioning, and precisely
focused HIDs. broad even beam. reasonably sharp cutoff. the Depo design
and internal layout, coincidentally, was sized almost perfectly for the E55
with minimal cutting. 210 owners are fortunate in this regard.

 

I decided to run the H7 Philips 4300K Bulb and 35W Philips Ballast. I think the light output/beam pattern/cutoff will be good even with H7s. Im gonna pull the headlight apart and do a lense swap on the projector thought to make everything a bit better. Will use a ZKW-R clear lense from TRS. Will post pics when done. thanks for the input guys...
