Grinding/Scraping Noise

Hey guys need help,

My buddy owns a Kompressor. Today he picked me up and I noticed a popping sound from the steering. If you were to sit still and turn the wheel from lock to lock you'd hear "pop pop pop pop" from the front of the car. Not terribly loud, but audible with the radio off. I asked him and he said this happens a lot but today out of no where we came to a stop we heard grinding noise. We tried to replicate it again and it happens when applying the brakes.. as the car rolls to a stop, if there are any bumps in the path that the front wheels have to hit, it makes a grind/scrape noise.

I believe his car has around 80k miles.

What can this be from? What is the poping sound that he is getting and what is this scraping/grinding noise that just started to happen? I believe he serviced his brakes recently maybe 10k miles ago so his rotors and brakes are fine.

Thanks in advance,

Karo

Karo,

im not really good at diagnosing w/o seeing or being in the car, but ill take a shot in the dark.
the grinding noise. is it more of a squeal? or a like a real hard grinding? if its a light squeal, maybe its the brake pad indicator. that means the pads are getting thin and are due to be changed. when he last changed the pads, did he get the rotors resurfaced also? if not sometimes the pad has very fast accelerated wear. it's happened to some of my friends in the past who have been beyond lazy lol. anyhow like i said shot in the dark.

brake pad wear also is dependant on whos driving. on my daily stock pads usually last me about 60-80k. i drive it like a grandma. on my previous "fun" cars the pads maybe last 10k. so depends on how your friend drives.

Thanks for the reply quadoptix. From what I remember it was more of a metal grinding than a squad but it happened when we were slowing down to go over road bumps.
