Ya know, I get tired of hearing that we didn't buy our cars for speed... I don't care how slow your car is, it is still fun to rev the nuts off it and have some fun!
I was given the option between our '99 CLK with 200,000 miles and our C240 with 30,000, and I chose the CLK. The C was a better car (newer, nicer) but I really loved the CLK. When it was in the shop, I drove the C around. It may not be the fastest (I was riding with my friend and we counted 6 seconds from gunning it to it actually accelerating), but it was still fun to put the petal to the floor and race him (1992/3 Nissan 240sx). I was able to get ahead, but I was gutsier with a merge lane. He fell back and I came in on white stripes. Before this, I had drove a four-banger Accord ('06). Another great car, but slow as hell, and not nearly as refined and smooth as the C240 (or any Benz). I'd take a C240 over most cars any day.
Sorry for the diarrhea of the mouth. I'm a bit bored.

a quarter mile at a time
A w203 C350 should be in the low 14's @ about 99mph.
Well, the quote was "Mercedes". The CLK550 and E550 are very quick, and they are non-AMG Benzes. The w203 C350 was also one of the fastest v6 sports sedans in it's class. Of course, this changed with the release of the n54 BMW TT I6 and the VQ37 from Nissan.
Don't forget, the "600" based twin-turbo V12 engine is also a non-AMG car, and provides mind-bending power straight out of the box.

The M272 E35 is a pretty good engine. The C350 would have whopped any V6 in 2005 - 2007 in it's class. But like E said, now they got the G37 and 135i. Call me a liar if you guys want but I hanged with a G37 up till 3rd gear and that's when it started pulling on me. But again a little driver error can make a big difference. On the freeway is when the car loves to move but you have to be in the right gear. The V6 puts a good fight against the 500 V8s. I haven't raced a CLK500 but a CL500 is no trouble. I honestly feel the E35 is pretty underestimated.
There is one guy on dragtimes who did 13.6 with ECU tune and filters (auto too)

Is that you Eric??

The 500 V8s are pretty slow anyway... I'd rather have the 550.
