Transmission interchangability.

I have the 2002 Coupe with the M111 engine. My recent shift linkage follies has me scouring the earth for a used, low mile trans.

I found a 2003 Coupe trans for a grand, but I don't know if it will bolt up. Anyone know?

The numbers on the casing are: 140-271-2601 and 211-271-0401.

Ed - any 722.X (up to & including 6) transmission should fit. Usually will need adaption with STAR. If you have the old TCU that can't be flashed you should try & get a newer TCU with it.

The numbers designate that the tranny is for M271 engine which makes sense. You might have to swap the bell housing - I can't remember - but you have a bell housing so no great shakes.

Ed, I was reading your previous thread where you explained you recent troubles with your brake lights and your transmission not shifting out of Drive and Neutral (if I recall correctly). Did you come to a conclusion that your transmission is finished? If so, what was the actual issue with it that made you determine it was done? I do know you have over 200k on the car, and that buying a used trans would more than likely be a cheaper alternative to rebuilding your current transmission. If you do replace the transmission, would this be something you are planning on doing yourself, or having a shop do? Keep us informed!

Sheesh, I knew this wasn't going to be easy. I thought the bell housing was one solid unit with the gears inside.

Having done tranny work in a Fiat, I am incredibly aware that my hack skills would net me a loss if I had to open a MB trans.

I wonder if the gearing is different?

Cool picture of fishing. I don’t get to do it enough.

Best I can figure was that the ECM inside the shift linkage needed to be reset. Once I got the shift linkage out, I was able to easily get all the positions in the trans by manually pushing and pulling on the shift rod attached to the trans.

So I started looking at the shift linkage itself. I was standing there with Karo trying to shift it while off the car. It seemed permanently stuck. About 10 minutes after being out of the car, the thing magically shifted. I have put about 250 miles on the car and no issues yet.

The trans previously had slow and abrupt shifts in the a.m. It is smoother since Karo used the SDS on the car. If I got the extra trans I would launch a premptive strike and do the swap prior to my trans going. I don't mind swapping a trans, but I do NOT want to get into the bowels of the gears and electrics.

The extra trans is because I know sooner or later my trans is going to give up the ghost....hopefully later. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be one of those crazy guys who will have a Coupe in my garage my entire life. So even if I don't use it for this car, It will be a cheap insurance policy.

Problem is the trans is out of state, so shipping factors in. I wish I could buy a cracked up car locally and just take the goods out and junk the hull.

What about the recent wreck in San Diego?
Is that what you were calling me about???
Your "proposition"....hopefully not an indecent one
If you go that route, I want the ESP yaw sensor under the back seat, or wherever the hell it is....
