You can not use it basically after you replace it. Over time, it just gets worse and worse whether normal wear and tear or spilling a sugar added drink/substance. Mines been replaced 1.5yrs ago and after a few months it began opening slow, chrome peeling.
Some of the objects in the C230 aren't built too well. For example, the door handle(s) break off from the inside, the rattle from my passenger side head rest, rattling at freeway speeds from the sunroof sliding cover, small rattles here and there, intermittent rear sun shade performance, center rest getting stuck when using it, etc.

I also believe the cup holders are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. I haven't done it, but I want to say I've seen them new on eBay for about 20.00 and you can probably get about that price from one of the parts places.
I remember reading a post somewhere from a guy that would take his cup holder out about every 6 months and soak/wash it in the sink with warm soapy water. He said it helped with the spilled drinks.
