Hi does anyone know how to program the smart keys other than taking them to the dealer?? Well the thing is that I just bought a set of keys on ebay for cheap. I lost one of my original keys and I just have one key left. So I bought a set on ebay but I have no Idea on how to program them to my car. Did I just waste my money???

 

There are a certain number of keys for each ignition lock. They cannot be reprogrammed.

 

So I would just have to order it through the dealer ??

 

That's right. Keys must be obtained from a dealer using your VIN.

so those who order new keys in order to get a key with a trunk button, those keys are already made and set aside. why dont we just get those keys upfront. in the manual it shows a key with a trunk button and not one without. atleast in my manual. so can i order a new key and get one with the trunk release button?

 

Yea in my manual it shows three keys. theres 2 with all the features and one with the unlock/lock buttons only, I guess those are the valet keys.

 

MB has discontinued the valet keys, I believe for MY2002.

There are no more valet keys, but the keys with just lock/unlock are not valet keys. The valet keys do not have any buttons on them at all. They are very thin, but still work in the ignition and they have a metal key attached to them.

 

so will i be able to order a new smart key with a trunk release button or no?

 

When I had my car in for Service A a couple weeks ago, I mentioned the fourth botton on the circuit board but not on the case to my service advisor. He didn't know about it. In his desk drawer he had a bunch of smart keys. He took apart a three button case from a coupe and sure enough the circuit board had four buttons. He then gave me two four button keys. I haven't swapped the boards yet. Ask your service advisor if he has any four button key laying around.

 

so its just a matter of changing out the buttons. the circuit board is already config's for a 4th button and all i need is the external button to contact the circuit board contact in order for the trunk to release remotely?

 

Up here in Canada the regular remote casing has only two buttons (lock and unlock) because the alarm system is a separate option for us. The circuit board inside the case has a third button, which I think is the alarm button because on my car it does nothing (and I don't have the alarm).

 

Well I dont know about the coupe keys but my keys comes with 4 buttons the panic,lock,unlock and trunk. Does the hatch actualy open with the trunk button '????

 

Open all the way? No. The button will pop the latch.

so all i need to do change the external case from a 3 button set up to a 4 button set up. no change to the circuit board is required. if im understanding all this correctly?

 

Yea man, o hey look if you want the 4 button keys you could go on ebay they have sets for like $5 all you have to do is put ur board into the four buttin case

Apparently he only ships to US. If someone needs keys with the trunk button and wants to bid on them, I will take 2 keys from the set, if someone can mail them to me to Canada.
