Key Fob Trouble

I'm having some trouble with the lock button on my key fob. Although everything else works fine (i.e. lock button, trunk button, and panic button), my lock button is not functioning. Two weeks ago, it was at a point where I would have to click it a few times until it would lock the doors. And last week, it didn't function whatsoever, no matter how hard I pressed or how many times I hit it. although the other buttons were functioning perfectly fine. All of a sudden last week, I hit the lock button, and sure enough it worked. It stayed like that for about 4 days, working perfectly fine, and now its back to not working at all. any ideas? I know I'm most likely going to have to have it replaced, but just out of curiosity, does anyone know why this is happening?
thanks

First thing is to change the battery, before jumping to any conclusions. Have you done that yet?

OK, next step. Does the other key work perfectly fine? Just making sure it's the key and not the receiver in the door handle.

If the other key has no troubles, then yes, probably have to bite the bullet and get a new key.

Guys, & remember that unless right on top of the car where IR works from the key to the door handle window - long distance is over RF via the antenna imbedded in the rear screen. The stick on connector centre of rear screen under the head lining & the antenna amplifier in the C pillar LHS. A malfunction in any of these will mess with key fob locking performance. Check all of these for good connections & earthing. Sticky pad at rear centre top of screen sometimes lets go. Give it a shove.

Have you had a tint done recently - they frequently cut the antenna wires as they come out of the screen or get water in the amp. There are many threads covering this.

Mav - your problem is typical of an RF problem - I see you have tinted windows. If that is a metallic tint then that is why you have a problem. Metallic tints can completely destroy RF reception. How is your radio reception?

That is what is wrong with my 2002 c230, I have metallic tint, my key fobs stopped working and my radio reception is terrible. I am going to change it very soon.

Excellent - another problem solved. You cannot have metallic tints on the rear screen - only fit non metallic types.

Good luck

He means rear window. They don't speak proper American English there (yet).

Does this mean I will need a new Rf Module, or will it retuen to working order once there is no interference?

it will be fine once you remove the interference unless the module was damaged...

The sticky connector pad is top dead centre of the "rear window" of the car just under the head lining. See diagram which I know is confusing. If you poke your head onto the rear parcell shelf you can see the wire trace in the glass running to the connector.

All will be fine with the metallic tint removed as long as they did not damage the screen wires when trimming the tint & as long as they did not get water into the aerial (sorry - for Tommy - antenna) amplifier.

& never will. Lived in the States for a long time - picked up zero accent, spelling or terminology. But having worked for an American Oilco for my entire career I'm comfortable with their *******isation of the language & sloppy terminology the confuses the ROW.

You fellows had better start brushing up on your Mandarin.

Glyn, is the IR receiver on the drivers door handle the only place you can use the "all windows and sunroof auto open" feature? Mine has been giving me intermittent problems in direct sunlight/heat, obviously when you need the feature the most.

THE C350
on older w203s like mine it has two ir sensors one on each front door. On newer models they took off the passenger one to save money. They are known to have issues in sunlight, heat and have to be replaced. I have been lucky both of mine are still fine but there are a lot of people on here that had to have it fixed under warranty. As should you - we will all be assimilated.

As I've said before, get the mods4cars module; you'll never have to worry about your receiver not picking up your signal again (except for those with metallic tint on their screens, I mean windows - must not let them win).

Yes - that is my understanding. Also see Trey's correct reply.

Yes - I try hard but find Thai easier. But the future will likely be Panglish & Mandarin
