AC Compressor Pulley Problem

So i was on my way to work yesterday when i started hearing a clicking sound getting worse and worse, by the time i got to work i popped my hood and found out the pulley for my air compressor was completely off but the serpentine belt was still securely on the pulley. The ac did stop blowing cold air on the way to work. i tried calling the dealer but they said they dont just sell the pulley seperatly from the air compressor and that i would need a whole new one even if it wasnt messed up, is this true? and how can i check to see if my compressor has gone bad on me or not? is there any way i can latch the pulley back onto the air compressor and make it work that way?

An AC Shop can take a look at it and see if they can just replace the head unit. These compressors don't have clutches like a traditional compressor. If it turns out that you need a new compressor, the dealer can get a remanufactured part or perhaps an AC shop can replace it. My total repair was over $1200, so be prepared to faint.
