Does the COMAND Navigation CD cost any money to run?

Does the COMAND Navigation CD cost any money to run?
Do you have to subscribe to the navigation service and pay a fee or does it automatically work once you place the CD into your COMAND console?

The CDs would have an up front cost associated with them but are provided free with the new car and are free to use once you have them. I'm not sure about updated CDs. I received one in the mail without solicitaion or cost.
I read someplace that some non-MB CDs work and are cheaper to buy.

It doesn't cost anything to run.
The car has a global positioning system (GPS) that calculates your position on the globe (latitude and longitude). The CD-ROM disc has a map of your geographic area, along with info on gas stations, street names, etc.
