Thinking of repainting car... suggestions?

Hey Everyone,

I've had some damage to my car over the past few months and have kept from cleaning it to the point where its driving me crazy. It includes pretty bad hail damage, rear bumper stretched paint, rock chips, etc...

Since I'm getting so much painted, worked on... I figured I might get the whole car painted. This got me thinking that I could keep the color stock (capri blue), OR I could go with a new color (probably an actual MB color). This brings me to my question for all of you:

If you would repaint your car or suggest a new color for me, what would it be?

I drive a 2003 capri blue hatchback with a reasonable amount of mods (mostly internal). I'd post pics, but if they're going to be recent... they're going to be dirty

I fell in love with Mars Red, if I had the choice that's what I would go with.

There's so much to doing a color change in terms of time and money that I'd think that just keeping it capri would make the most sense. Plus, it's a nice color to boot.

If I were changing to an MB color, I'd do Obsidian or Paprika - that's a very nice niche color. Or the yellow that's been on some first gen SLKs, or a designo color, espresso. Oooh - or something even more interesting, Amethyst (though Mike would hate the competition!)

Though I think that MB colors are pretty limiting in general, so if I were going to the trouble, I'd go somewhere more interesting. Like that throwup color from the last gen M3, ie, or lemans blue. Blue Water Metallic is also a cool BMW color.

But as I said, I'd keep it stock and just fix whatever panels you need to. Spend the money on something else, unless you have a paint hook-up, of course.

Do you really think that it would cost that much for orange peel?

oh wow... maybe i'm underestimating the cost of a total paint job. i was planning on doing both bumpers, door, and possibly hood for the repairs. since my roof is glass.. i figured there aren't many more panels to do the whole car.

still haven't gotten any exactly quotes yet.

Quality. At least OEM quality, would probably cost you upwards of $2~3,000

But I'd say Mars Red with Pearl or Gold Flakes.

I have yet to see a clean Iron Man themed car.

Why have two cars of the same color?
Designo graphite does look nice, but unless you have a fetish for it.. I'd say white or red would be great choices..

If you're looking for quality repaint.. it may not even be worth it all together unless you're getting a fat discount, or insurance is paying for it.

insurance will be covering hood and one bumper, and the cosmetic repairs.

it may not be cost effective, but i just like to ponder the idea.

i agree with everyone that keeping stock color is most practical... but with dark colors i can't see the contrast of the black glass roof which has such a great two tone look on lighter colors (like mars red). so i'm just contemplating the thought of changing the color for fun.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Same/matching color will be less expensive because you won't have to do the door jambs and normally hidden areas. But if I was going to paint a whole car I would pick a unique, non MB color.

if its not going to be more than 500-1000 more i might bite the bullet. it depends on the estimate.

if a non-MB color... what would you pick?

If you choose to change the color, you better plan to keep the car for a very long time because the amount you spend will be worth almost as much as the car, and an after factory paint job scares most buyers away. Most buyers usually suspect a hidden accident repair or something.

Also, not sure what the process is to change the color of a car on government/registration documents...but Im sure its complicated.

But in the end I would go with alpine white if I did end up changing the color. With the black pano-roof and HID/Bix, the car would look CLASSY!!!

High quality paint job is going to cost you!

And then there is always the problem of a door chip that just gets the top layer of paint and exposes your original color. If I were you I think I would go back to the original color.
