Help, I'm losing my boot!

The boot around my shifter just pulled loose, any thoughts on how to re-attach it? It's just sitting there and doesn't seem to clip in anywhere...

Is that what that is? Must have been from the original owner, I've been coffee free for far too long. I've tried popping it back in with no luck, it just sits there with nothing to grip it, doesn't seem to clip in . Do I just need another one?

Aren't these clips known to break?

The best fix is to replace it. Someone has a thread on how to fix it with paper clips but that's really a botch job.

Looks as though the rear clip has gone.

Do you know where I can find a new one? I haven't called the local dealer, I'm not sure I'm in the right frame of mind to hear their price . It looks unrepairable so a replacement is probably the best bet.

Botch job? Uh, that was me spank boy, and it works just great.
Since they don't sell the surround piece with the clips, and the whole assembly is 150 or more, I'd say it's quite good!

Pop the trim piece, remove the gear shift knob and leather boot, drill some tiny hole through the the side of the plastic where the clips are or were, place into the trim piece, use some paper clips through the drilled holes, and viola.

Put the shift knob on, snap the trim in, and you're done. It will never come off again,
the only caveat is that you must unsnap the trim and remove it, the boot/bezel and the trim as one, and let your mechanic know too.

Sorry Todd - forgot it was you

I still think it's a botch job but Hey! - whatever floats your boat.

Herr Daimler would be turning in his grave. Benz held together with paper clips!

I think he's been turning since the W203 was introduced and Benz started throwing cars together without proper testing.

True! read the 203 vs 204 thread over on the 204 forum. It does achieve some perspective. W203 was not the worst Benz in those bad days.

Thats a good question, how do you take the whole thing apart? Does the shift knob just screw off?

FACT: W203 is the worst Benz according to C300sport

Much more. Over $200 if I remember correctly, and I can't find the receipt. It comes with the SW switch. Clips have been beefed up. Worth it, but there's nothing wrong with a well done kluge.

i remember you could order just the chrome. that was the quote i remember i got from my parts guy. maybe they changed it again? either way I didn't even end up buying new chrome piece since I take them apart a lot when I was installing all kinds of stuff, so i would've probably broke them again. ended up just velcro the thing down and it works nicely.

That would be nice, I'll check locally and see if I can just get the surround. In the mean time I want to try to paperclip fix, can someone guide me on taking the shifter apart? There are no obvious screws to remove and I don't want to damage it by accident.

Thanks!
