the company thinks consumers won't accept a ten-speed unit.
In truth I hated the 7 speed the first few times I drove it, but it grew on me, and I've come to realize its smoother and the lower final gear was a must. That being said I've never had a problem with a decent 5 speed, Mercedes just never got the ratios right. I can see how 7 speeds is better for the luxury crowd, its nice and smoother but I cant see how 2 more gears will be any better.

i wonder if you can have a cruise mode and use 9 gears and for sports mode, reduce the amount of gears (is that physically possible? lol )

Trying to keep the large engines as close to constant RPM as possible for emissions. Losses are lower than a CVT. When & if the US introduces an emissions tax on new cars as SA has just done you will all be running for the 9 speed if you want big high torque engines.

I have an LS460 and with 8 gears i think its ridiculous....Its takes way to much time downshift (Since its Lexus Auto and not a MCT or DST) and choosing gears in the sport mode is not much fun BUT....... at 85mph in eighth gear im at 2200 rpms Knowing mercedes which is way better with transmissions..... should be ok, Be nice if it was MCT haha!

they just wanna one up bmw, and lexus. Even hyundai is coming out with a 8speed auto. Its probably not needed but since there the bench mark for luxury cars, they have to maintain that image.

i think its a good idea on the bigger engines, better economy, definitely a better choice than a STUPID cvt, and cool. yeah to some it might be overkill but i like it.
however if they throw it in the small engines i will laugh haha
and yes, not as sporty but how many S550s do you see driving like there n Laguna Seca
