Shifter arm exposed. Note the groove ring about 3/4 of the way down. This is where the new knob retaining ring locks in.

Cut the end of the boot off. Don't cut to far down to start with. You can always cut more later, but you can't add any once its gone.

Here is the Schatz laurel knob I got from http://www.ForMyMercedes.com . The leather is tucked between the metal cap and the nylon washer.

Tighten the compression nut to hold the leather in place. Play around with the leather to get it to lay even before really tightening down on the nut.

Loosen the knob one or two turns so you can push it down on the shifter arm. Push down until the plastic retaining ring clips into the goove on the shifter arm. Then you tighten it back by turning the entire shifter boot. Turn it until it is straight. It doesn't have to be real tight.

Clip the boot back into the console and it is done. I did this at lunch today and it took about 15 minutes. I'm going to take it back out and cut a little more off the boot so it doesn't sag to much.

Out Of Control!!
Looks good with everything (I say that, since I don't understand the idea of wood on interiors of cars in general). I hope it wears well.
One thing - might want to cut down the shift pattern into a small medallion and double tape it to either side of the boot; will help with valets, idiots at the dearlership/indy shop who don't know how to drive a MB manny, and also with inspection; I would have failed inspection in NJ if I didn't have my shift pattern posted somewhere near my aftermarket knob (yes, I'm serious!).
