Unhappy Malfunction message

Whoops! I may have made a mistake. 2003 C320. I drained the oil and changed the filter today, but did not yet have the new oil to put in the engine. When I tried to reset the service record, I checked the oil level, and came up with a malfunction - red screen. (of course, since there is no oil!)

My question: when I put in the oil tomorow will this go away? or do I have to do some sort of reset? Thanks for any quick reply so I can sleep better!!

yes the sensor is sensing NO oil so once you add some it will tell you to add more overfilled or level ok

may I suggest allways keeping extra filters drain plug gasket and oil on hand.....

same screen (red) comes up if you unlock the steering tilt thing or leave your ebrake on and drive away

Like a dummy, I thought I could just drive down to my Auto Zone and get the oil I needed - was looking for Mobil 1 0W-40 or Valvoline SynPower- silly me, they did not have either !!! then went to Walmart and all they had was low end oil, and everything else was closed. So I will have to wait until Mon morn and hope something is open on Columbus Day.... as you suggest, next time I will plan in advance.

You will get a red screen if the truck lid is not closed properly as well.

And door open, and SRS error I believe, and the even scarier "OMG - You are trying to put Wal-Mart Oil in me!" error.

I'm surprised Autozone didn't have any - that's where I get mine.

Cool

Thanks fellas, all went just fine. Got the oil at local part store $7.99 a quart, and car is no longer giving me a malfunction message.

BTW - Autozone does have it sometimes - but every time I need it they are out of it. I live in MB, BMW, Audi, VW territory so demand is high for this grade of oil.

The Walmart I tried was in a center city, and they were more into low grade oils and Mobil1 High Mileage.

Next time I will plan ahead and get the oil first!!

I shopped in 7 stores (avoiding the dealer) before finding the right oil - particularly Mobil 1. It was Advance Auto Parts. So I am actually scared now for scarcity of the right oil.

For any of us planning an upcoming DIY oil change, if nothing found locally (some of the local auto part stores actually told me they "cannot order oil") then may be to consider ordering online. The price onlne I have found to be around what Walter paid at his local store.

Hmmz.. I don't think that is a correct oil 5w-30 and some members here will for adding that into your car.

If 5w-30 can be added, let me know. I have a few cases laying around from my previous asian import.

Then again, I don't think I want to risk this.

I did see 0w-40 at walmart in my local area, if they have the right stuff, I do not see why you would want to put something else. Even so, you can order that stuff online and wait for the next oil change. Not worth the engine trouble when you can get the right oil.

Speaking of wrong, I recall putting the wrong grade of gas. The engine was knocking crazy through out until I put back premium.

I'm afraid that was the case.

I think some members here states that that book is not correct.

Well. I'll sit back and have to watch this through.

Thanks for the info though, since I do have a few cases of 5w-30 sitting around.

Those members must still be buying there fluid at the dealer..

I didn't just put some Cheap A$$ 5w-30 in the car.. that i had laying around.. I made this choice for a reason.

Ive been buying mobil 0-40 for the longest time and doing my own oil changes everytime. From my Exp this seems to be better.. Im almost up for another oil change so i may get the oil tested.

http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-98KE65-E.../dp/B000B8WCBG

Once again its not cheap oil~

I should also note my MPG went up from 23 to 29..

The thing is why do people get so upset when someone uses the wrong oils in there own car. I honestly don't care if you put gasoline in with your oil because some guy said it helps your car run smother(true story) it's you own dam car but please don't tell everyone that it is approved say that due to personal reasons you chose this oil. Xhale707 i am not calling you out i am saying in general that is what happens. In life you have to make your own decisions and can't follow everyone off the cliff and if you think or have reason to believe that brand x is better the y go for it just don't take people off the cliff with you lol curious to see how that oil preforms in testing please send it out for analysis.

Haha you can roll with me when i wanna go off a cliff. But i don't think that will be any time soon. I never said it was approved. My Mercedes book says i can use many grades. If you looked at what i got ( i think ) its better then mobil 1. ( Now that im getting called out for this blah im gonna have to get the oil tested ) LoL

Honestly u have to take chances at sometime.

I agree if there are not risk takers we would still be living in caves and eating each other Do what you think is right and live with the benefits or consequences that's life.

hahaha cave men =D

Once again i could have purchased Mobil 1 0-40 It was next to me on the shelf
But i went with 5w-30 extended performance. If you read reviews and more about it im sure others will look into it.

My Grandfather has a 2001 c320 and has been running Mobil 1 5w-30 for 4 years without any issues. Not the extended performance one just the reg one

Do you guys really wait the full 13 K miles before your oil changes?

I have talked to 2-3 German cars & MB mechanics I am acquainted with on this, and each of them has told me that no matter what the MB manual ... says, do Not wait that long for the oil change. Do it after 6 or max about 7-8 K miles.

something to consider, I think!
