Does any one know if the center plastic piece in the gear shift knob comes off?

Does any one know if the center plastic piece in the gear shift knob comes off?
My car has the ugly black piece and I would like to change it. I have seen a car where a person covered that piece with a vinyl sticker. It had a carbon fiber design. I did some shopping around and found a brushed aluminum sticker to look like the c32 knob. Do you guys think this will look tacky or is this a good idea?
If this is not possible does any one know where I can buy the c32 knob or something similar? How much $?
My c230 at least had a mercedes emblem on it. I wonder why they did away with that!
