How much damage for insurance to total it?

So i got into a fender bender a few weeks ago. Im from california and my insurance is base out in arizona. They finally came by yesterday to look at my car to get an estimate cost of the damage. I dont have any pics of the damage right now but the whole front end including the passenger side fender plus the passenger side rim/wheel will need to be replace. Im not sure yet at this point if theres any frame damage. The insurance guy said they'll have to look more into it first to see if theres any frame damage. From the estimate that he gave me the cost came up to around $6-7k. At what point does the insurance company will rule it out as total? My car is a 05 c230 with about 45k miles on it. Pretty much the whole frontend including the hood, headlights, some headlight/side wires needs to be replace, along with the passenger side rim and fender. Pretty strange that none of my airbags was activated during the crash because the insurance guy did mention that in a crash like this atleast the passenger side air bag would of have to deployed since the crash was on the passenger side. So at this point im not even sure if my air bags are even working. Just trying to see if anyone has been in this position with the same damage and was your car total or did they fixed it?

They will fix your car.. Enjoy new fenders lights and paint! make sure you tell them no front license plate. Crash wasn't hard enough for air bags to pop

A total is when the repairs cost more than the value of your vehicle, an estimate is your car is worth about $15K, so it won't be totaled. What a lot of people don't realize is now your car has a "diminished value" and you should able to recoup that difference. I highly suggest you look into this because so many people are unaware of this policy provision. Call your agent and bring this up! This usually only applies to third party claims.

The insurance company will actually total the car if the damage is 70% or more of what the car's value is. Usually if I do the inspection I'll total the car if it's over 50%. There's no point to have the car taken apart just to see if there's another 20% damage. Feel free to PM me if you have further question.

based on the info you've provided, it's unlikely they'll declare it as "total loss".

I get the feeling, you WANT them to declate it as total loss

OK, I don't understand. First I doubt they will total it, but....if so, then you've got a chunk to put down on the BMW. If they fix it, then drive it straight over and trade it, if that is what you want.

get another quote from an authorized mercedes shop and show it to your insurance company, they have to match the price to the place you want your car fixed from. A mercedes quote will definately be higher then what they estimated. Your insurance company estimate will be the bare minimum to get the car back on the road or drivable condition. So run to the dealer and get a proper OEM quote ASAP and then show it to the adjuster from your insurance carrier and they will have to honor it.

Play hard ball if you want it totaled...

I chose to do my repeat business with a larger known independent autobody repair failicty who takes on the insurance co's often. They are suing my last claim for what was less than a $1000 delta at their expense...albiet the legal fees, collection and all, surely will cost the ins carrier much more now.

In NY State, you can get is fixed at a shop of your choice period. My lastest claim ...above fight noted ...is with the "other party's ins carrier" .

My shop demands a $55/shop hour rate and way more hours used vs. the $44/hour and less time the insurance company appraiser wanted to ram down their throat, (ie: like it was a shop on their retainer). Also factory OEM replacements no cheaper imported or used parts were to be installed.

So if you can (again policy and ins co you have may dictate? or are you making a claim on someone else's insurance?) you may want to make sure you are getting MB parts..is a RECOND bumper cover (used not new, a used one or yours can be salvaged?) and what is "qual" replacements... that are these actual MB OEM replacement parts? And used junkyard RECY wheel ... it that without refinishing? Was your wheel rough to begin with? Am I missing it you surely need a front end alignment check too now... Frame checks spec'd out too?

Agreed 70% would total, as there will be hidden damaged, a rental for you to figure in (if you had the rider or if you claim to other person's policy....) Demand a comparable MB sedan too no mini spec crap car... if you want that stuff added up $$$ may get it there now...

Well im not trying to have my car total but like i said i wouldnt mind either if they declare it total. Also can i go get an estimate at a different shop like someone mention and will the insurance company require me to pay more out of the $500 deductable that im suppose to pay? Next time i talk to my insurance i'll make sure to ask them if the replacement parts are oem mercedes or cheap aftermarket and does it matter what condition my wheel was in? If they replace it arent they suppose to replace it with a new rim/tire? Or are they going by the condition it was in so since it was used are they gonna replace it with another used rim/tire?

I want to do this, but my car is not driveable. How can i go about getting a quote from an authorized mercedes shop? Can i just bring the esitmate paper that i got from my insurance over to an authorized mercedes shop and have them look at what needs to be replaced and see what the prices is for the real oem parts?

It's totally up to your insurance company, ask them. It varies from company to company.

You have good questions and you should explore options, I am no expert but have been involved in 3 accidents in 4 years all of which I was hit. I have State Farm and 2 involved claims on them, they went great and paid the $58 - $55/hour no questions asked.

Maybe contact an independent reputable body shop (not insurance steered one). Rules and outcomes may vary state to state and may also depend on your insurance company or theirs? Who are you dealing with (yours or the other guy at fault?).

You are only out your $500 deductible, if you are at fault.
You may or may not have rental car coverage with your policy.
Many body shops have free loaners (100,000 mile rent a wreck - but for free or real cheap).

With you at fault & your insurance is paying the claim you realize the total $$ costs will drive the potential increase to your insurance bill now?
Then everything you do to contain costs is perhaps to your benefit then, and perhaps you don't want the $15k total (don't forget you get sales tax $$ too) vs. the $7k repair. So the new Bimmer being worth more may also have a larger surcharge on the new insurance bill. If you damaged other property and that is your fault, it too will add & go on your claim then...did you hit someone?

Also do you know if in your fine print .... for a cheaper premium did you agree to use non OEM parts and used parts in repairs?
You may have agreed to that.....may need your agent to help there.

I would not trust-use a claim or a shop writting an estimate off theirs alone, not seeing the car. In NYS towing it off the road to safety is 1 step but the next day or 2 it gets towed to the repair shop of your choice & direction (especially if it is not already a total by your insurance rep seeing it). It is all part of the claim. (I suppose there may be a reasonable mileage limit though). In NYS you are not required to use insurance co estimates or their supplied shop who you might figure has to cut corners.

NOW If the other party is at fault and you have a police report helping that cause. You should try and place a claim on their insurance now, not through your insurance. Then you will not pay any deductible. If that insurance denys it... you still may have to use your insurance (with paying deductible). Later your insurance will try through “subjugation”, to get it back, including your deductible from the other party.
But without police report and them clearly identifying who was at fault ...it at times is just a “he said she said”. Meaning the insurance co’s usually both go their own way for the respective party they insure, you lose the $500 and have a potential insurance premium surcharge.

Pay the towing charges and take it to the dealer in any case you will get it fixed at the dealer(you can get reimbursed for that too from your insurance and keep sticking them with all the bills.........as other said rental and all if you want your car to hold its resale value / or if you plan on driving it. It will 100% be considerably more then what your insurance company is quoting I will say WAY WAY MORE..........TRUST ME 100%...............even if after the dust settles you decide to go the cheap route you can pocket the difference...........but I am guessing not............GET IT TOWED TO THE DEALER ASAP.................... and report back the delta....i mean the difference................

It's not likely that they'll total this one. I believe e24kgold on here had about the same dollar amount of damage to his 05 C230K with 135k miles and they repaired it.

But you never know what is lurking once they pull it apart.

Edit: If the passenger seat is empty the passenger side airbag is not going to deploy regardless. It is deactivated unless someone is sitting in the seat.

The car is getting tow tomorrow to an authorized mercedes benz body shop. Should be able to know whats going to happen by friday. Im also asking the body shop to get a complete estimate with oem parts since the estimate the insurance gave me is for aftermarket parts only. Thanks to all the ones that replied! and your right about the passenger airbag, i forgot that if theres no passenger then its deactivated haha
