Touch shift pattern
Hi,
I just bought a 2006 C280 4matic and I am happy it drives better than a FWD with studded snow tires. I have a question shifting from D to 4 by briefly pressing the lever to the left in the D- direction. The manual says the transmission will shift from"current gear to the next lower gear as permitted." Does that mean the actual gear you are in, I assume? If you drive 15 miles per hour in snow and you downshift from D, does the gear display tell you are in 4th gear or the lower gear before the downshift? Mine won't do that and it shows me 1st. UI can upshift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and 4th to D without problems. I don't think I have a tranny problem, but I would like to hear from the other owners. I haven't tried to downshift driving in highway speed though.

What you are experiencing is normal. If you're going 15mhp on D you are on 2nd gear so when you move lever left it will downshift to 1st and just show 1st.
Even in manual mode if you are in 4th and come to a stop, it'll show 4th. Then the gears will change automatically and hold 4th until you shift.

It's not like tiptronic transmission. D- & D+ will just put tran. in 2 mode (city traffic) 1 mode (extreme uphill). That's because we have only P,R,N,D but other cars have P,R,N,D,1,2 and so -,+ is like moving handle to 2 or 1.
