Thanks,

The only license you need is a valid state driver's license.

What about the courses? Are they blocked off city streets, or dedicated tracks, or something else entirely? If anyone knows of a website, perhaps for one of the sanctioning bodies, I would love to read up on the subject.

Autocross is a grassroots type ametuer motorsport where typically low speed courses laid out, usually in parking lots, with cones or pylons.
Cars are grouped into classes as Lynn said and run the course, usually 3 to 4 times, and compare times. You are on the course alone so there is little chance for personal injury or damage to your car.
I've seen a pic of a Town Car running a course. It's too fun but it is competitive. I just wish there was a more centralized place to learn more about events and locations by region.
Here is the post in E&G with links to rules etc. for this event.
SCCA Website, Solo II, also know as Autocross. Great place for information, rules, and links. You could also hit google.
The M Club hosts events at Giants Stadium. Cool beans for me.

This is the first time I ever tried this kind of sport. The crouse were set up to be a fast crouse (total distances are 1.5 mile run). I was driving my car (MB C320) no modifications at all, 100% stock, and competed with all the Porsche. There were one BMW M3 and one MB C320 (my car) in the event.
Since this was my first time, the first run of my time was 2'46.82, second run was DNF (did not finished) because I missed the gate (damn ); however, the third and last run of my time was 2'33.04. I felt so good to have such a good improvment of my time. I love to try it again 'cause I had such a great time. Now thanks to nukblazi to point out the M club. I just did the pre-registration for the 5/25 event. So, hope to see you guys there....
I wish I had know about that one. I am trying to keep up with as many events as possible. If anyone knows of an event in MA, CT, VT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, or MD please help me/ us out and either PM or email me. I will look for as much information as I can get a post it Events & Gatherings. I cross reference as many MB forums as possible and I try to get my BMW friends to post links on their forums.
I will be running my '02 C230 Sport Coupe stock for now.
Good times!
Thomas

I might take the C320 or the ML500 and have a little fun there...if its okay for me to go...
Oh for the tire pressure start with 45 PSI then let the air out is easier than find air pump unless you got one.
Ask around many people are happy to give you any advices.
you are good to go, bring helmet, if you have one. make sure you change tire pressure before you run.
C230K- What tire pressure were you running?
zpeed- Same question!

He knows who he is... (I just hope he is not in the same class as me)Anyway, not bad considering the region and the brand. We need MORE PEOPLE. Come on, people spend this much money on a car and aren't even curious what it can do? Or is everyone only interested in Bench racing?

(notice the antagonistic undertone)
If you love to do autocrossing and don't like to use your own car, here is the event you must like to attent. Its the "Mazda rev it up" event. Go to the following website to find out the closer city that you can joint in. There is the one coming up in NYC on Aug.

Good luck guy.
PS: Nukblazi, I will keep you post if I find any info on the autocrossing. However, I'm now trying to get to a so call " driver education" event. Its a real on track driving event. If I get more info on it, I'll let you know then. Happy driving your MB
Hey newNBz, looks like so far we have five people going to be there from MBWorld, one unmentionable will be driving his Civic though
He knows who he is... (I just hope he is not in the same class as me)
You better hope that Civic is in a different class. It will ***** slap you and take your lunch money
Haha, I'm scr3wed.
newMBz- EMRA hosts a good amount of ameteur events. You can get training with them for Time Trialing and actual track time. From what I understand, SCCA requires two licenses so EMRA certification/ training then a driving school would count as 2.

At these events, you can take your car & run as fast as you (and your instructor) dare.
The both run driver education events in the East (places like Pocono, Watkins Glen, Summit Point WVa, Road Atlanta, Roebling Road (Savannah, GA), VIR (Danville, Virginia), etc.
I did several Car Guys events many years ago (instructed for them), and they were very well run, very educational, and you got personal instruction during each of your sessions (3 x 1/2 hour sessions each day).
I never did Track Time, but knew several people who did, and they spoke very highly of it also.
These events didn't apply toward an SCCA license when I was instructing, but things may have changed since then.
