TeleAid
Hi
I am just curious how many people decide to continue the TeleAid subscription and how happy are you. I have a 2002 model where TeleAid is a standard equipment and it comes with a one year free subscription.
Also I notice a humming noise coming from the system. Anybody notice that? What is that noise?
Thanks,

I did not continue my service after my first free year. If you don't have service you can still hit the SOS button in the event of a problem right?/ You just can't call ahead for a hotel and that stuff?
I am not sure what the noise is mine dosn't do that.

The impression I get is that most (more than 80%) do cancel at the end of their "free" subscription. I had it for a year, never used it, saw no need to spend $225 the next year, so cancelled.
Now that it is unbundled on some models and sold as an option, my guess is that retention is higher among those who freely choose the pay for the option.
If you refer to the hum from the overhead console, there is a small fan behind the grill on the right side of the console that draws cabin air into the console and over one of the temperature sensors. It runs all the time.

Teleaid is one of the biggest rippoffs. For $250 you're lucky if you even hit the button once a year. My in-car Comand GPS + cell phone does the same without the extra cost.

I used it once.
For trying to get to a location that I'm not too familiar before I got my Comand. It does help a little but doesn't justify with $225/yr.
It might be benefit when you get into a big accident at middle of no where with celluar signal. For who live in the City with Celluar phone at hand and always obey all traffic laws (like me ), I don't see it useful at all.

I get an insurance credit of $340 per year for TeleAid. They give the same credit for OnStar etc., so this alone makes it worth while.
I also use it...When I was on my way to Montreal last year for the F1 race, I needed to contact the hotel to tell them we'd arrive later than expected (we stopped at a brew pub in Saratoga Springs for a late lunch). MB gladly made the call and charged it against time I had not used (yet).

If your car is stolen, towed or broken into.....TeleAid knows when and where your car was tampered with...and more importantly, where it is. I believe they can also remote disable it while they contact the police.
And YES....SOS is a feature of TeleAid. You can't get one without the other.
I almost forgot this...when I was getting error codes, I used TeleAid to contact MB...they promptly made same day arrangements for service WITH a loaner!

I got the discount...
but its not much. It's only 8% off the comprehensive part of the insurance. So to me, it only saves me $8 per year. Well, its good for 1 movie ticket.

If you decide not to sign on after the free first year, in the event of an accident, does it still notify the police/EMS if the airbags or ETR's deploy? My dealer told me that it wasn't necessary if you have a cellphone and hardly use it, but reassured me that even if I don't have the subscription, they will contact the authorities in the event of an emergency...is this true?

From what I was told by my dealer, if your car was stolen, Tele-Aid can only track the vehicle as long as the key is in the ignition and running. Once the key is removed they can't track the vehicle. Of course you should know the last place it was at, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

"tele aid is pretty much bull****" - that came from my salesperson when i wanted to buy the car...
i got LoJack instead, its a much better system and its on 24, 7 , key in the ignition or not, it was about $800
i think it only works in the states, so if someone were to drive across the border to mexico(2,3 hrs away, its useless , someone correct me if im wrong
