2002 Coupe M111 headgasket replacement DIY

I highly recommend printing this out and putting a copy in your
file if you have a 2002 coupe.

For us high mileage guys, it is just a matter of time. Good read, but man that is not Fiat.

Thanks for posting.

The process of replacing head gasket looks pretty straight forward except dealing with the timing chain. One day, I will learn to do this job.

Ha, yeah I've never done a dual cam head.
As you say it's not a FIAT, but I did have the head off my 86' X19
on a couple occasions. Not an easy job, had someone help the 1st time, then did it myself the 2nd time.
It's time consuming, but if you have a good guide to to work from and the right tools, it's not rocket science. I wish the guide here was a little more clear on the timing marks etc.
Hopefully the service DVD will fill in the blanks.
I also found a guide for the doing the gasket on the 6 cylinder cousin of the M111, the M104 I think it is, which also has problems on the rear in this case #6 cylinder leaking.
1st head I ever did was on a Toyota PU, with a 20R motor, which happened to be 2.2L. I was 19. I went to the dealership and picked the guys heads in service, and labeled every nut and screw.

At some point I will need to do this, and certainly not looking forward to it.
So far though, it's still running ok despite the obvious coolant leak on the 4th cylinder.

So, you have coolant leak at #4? I saw that I have some corrosion on the threads of my spark plug at #3. That gave me pause for concern. I have been seriously thinking of selling the Coupe and finding another.

We'll see.

Yeah, I'm kinda torn on that issue.
If it was very well cared for, but I've been having fairly good luck with mine
lately with the exception of the starter.
Either way, no money to replace her right now.

Hey, thanks for the link! just doing my m111 head gasket this week and I noticed no torque specs for head bolts, any chance someone has that and the tightening sequence? I also need the torque specs for the chain tensioner central spring and end cap? Any help would be very appreciated as I hope to get another 200K on the odometer after this first 100K

thanks again

Any ideas on the torque spec (above question) and also does anybody know the part# of a good gasket kit? I called AutohauzAZ and they just sell the individual gaskets. I saw a few Victor Reinz gasket kits on ebay, I'm thinking that might be the best bet but it didn't look like it included the timing chain caver gasket. Plan to execute Kokes' instructions this week.

C230K with 155k, leak at rear to the outside vs. cylinder (thank goodness).

Figured out Timing chain cover gasket answer...it's just an O-ring.
Still need torque spec for the big stuff.
Thanks in advance.

I can't find this information anywhere, and for some reason the guy in the link didn't even talk about removing the timing chain, but is doing a head gasket! lol Also no mention here of how to lock the cams at TDC, good thing I found that somewhere else.
So does the timing chain become loose enough to remove when the tensioner is removed, or do I need to remove the gear on the exhaust cam?
