Air con knobs help!

Has anyone else experienced the four rubberized knobs deteriorating.
I have a 2002 230 coupe that is garaged, yet the rubber is coming apart. About 40k on the odometer and I am the original owner. Babied the car like crazy. Also the paint does not hold up well. The slightest pebble causes a sizable chip. It seems like the paint did not bond well to the sheet metal.
Any help about the knobs, costs, availability etc... would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Knob deterioration was/is common. Replacement kits are no longer available. You will either have to fix them yourself or buy a new contoller.

Take out the knobs, scrub off the sticky ugly thing.
The knobs will be better looking (and smooth and shiny) than the original.
Shan.

Many thanks.
Love the car, but is obvious as it gets older as to where Daimler got cheap.
