Since transfer case was mentioned, check out this thread. There was a Technical Service Bulletin posted in January, 2009, so this is a known issue. Seems like it should have been a recall given the potential cost if you let it go beyond the point of repair by fluid change.

Same issue
I had the exact same issue and it came to a point where I was driving, not too far from home and my pulley/alternator belt run off the assembly and tensioner. Turned out that my tensioner had a faulty bearing, the assembly was slightly running off track and belt wore beacauas of this. Cost me £240incl vat and it’s just fine now. Hope this gives you some hope of a solution.
