C200 CDi AUTO GEARBOX PROBLEM - HELP PLEASE
I have a C Class 200 CDi 2005 (facelift W203 5 speed auto Gearbox).
Recently on occasions I have been experiencing problems with the gearbox. The car seems to get stuck in a specific gear and won’t allow any automatic or tip-tronic gear change, even if I put my foot down on the accelerator to the point where I am pressing the button underneath the accelerator pedal the gears won’t change.
It seems like it goes into limp mode. The tiptronic doesn’t work as well when this happens. When this is happening when I put it into neutral and reverse it jumps which doesn’t feel right and doesn’t happen when the gearbox is fine. Once I switch the car on and off it seems to be working perfectly fine. It only seems to do this when I am driving local as motorway once I am in 5th gear it’s not a problem.
Any ideas? I had the gearbox serviced about a year ago changing the filter and oil (I did use genuine Mercedes parts).
Any help would be much appreciated.
Did you take it to the garage for a STAR diagnostics? any codes popped there?
I have a C200 CDI 2005 and it sounds like it might be gear sensor or ECU needs reprogramming. I had my ECU reprogrammed cause of weird error codes and occasional limp mode with no warnings.
BTW, where are you from?

Please check for stored codes with an OBDII scanner.
Check fluid level in the transmission. Might be low or getting too hot. 99% of problems are fluid level related.
Check electrohydraulic bush on the front RHS diagonal of the transmission for oil leaking past the o rings. If oil gets onto the TCU harness it can cause all sorts of trouble & ultimately wick oil up the harness to the TCU which is under the passenger kick plate. The replacement bush with new o rings is an $8 part. If leaking we can tell you how to replace. Common problem.

The solution was nothing to do with the gearbox itself. In fact it was due to the cars battery being 7 years old and its voltage had dropped. With this battery the car started up fine and all the usual electrical component worked well.
However the gearbox is computer controlled and losses to voltage at the battery
caused his gearbox problems.
The fitment of a new battery cured all of the gearbox malfunctions. This new battery was fitted approx 2 years ago and the gearbox operation has been perfect ever since.
If its the gear selector, see my thread for DIY. I have same car than you

Jumping in here.. I have pulled my 2002 model apart due to this issue, tracked all wireing. Nothing to do with oil change, filters, rads etc. If you lift up the gear stick unit you will see the gear selector.. You will also see a small unit that slots into the Gear selector with about 4/5 wires going into the unit, hard explain.. But it is like a narrow plug that slots into the module. This is where the problem lies. If you get a tool and push the connected piece to the right and hold it there, switch on your ignition, you will see P R N D and the tip tronic will also work.. If you take the toll away you will lose the gears again.
I currently have a wedge holding the connected piece to the right/ it also works to the left but this will give you the gears and away you go. It is a connection fault that is creating low voltage....
Hope this helps, if I can explain better please ask!

It is easy part to replace, just plug and play. I accidentally bought that too when fixing my transmission and it cost only about $40 from ebay.
I am a new member so dont shoot me if I ask the wrong questions...
I have recently bought a Merc C200 cdi saloon 2001 model with automatic transmission. Nice car, good handling and everything (the car has done 170000 km). But it has these issues with the transmission and it seems to be as you have wrote in this tread. It works fine, but the next second it does not. All gears works, it does not jam in ex the first or second or anything like that, but the transmission seems to shift to early. When the car is rolling the transmission start to shift gears when the engine is at some 1500 rpm. This can not be correct??
I have also noticed that when the transmission is not working properly the engine wont rev up for more than 3500 rpm. If I restart the engine the engine revs goes all up to the limit and the transmission works properly. There is no pattern in when these problems occures. So, who can explain to me what this is and how I am going to fix it?
