Oil Change Poll

I just went over the 1000 mile mark on my 02 C320. My driving has been very smooth, being careful not to rev over 4000 rpms, and to vary my speeds. I know that some people have stated that they changed their oil after the first 1000 miles, but because the manual does not say to do this, I'm unsure if I should. Looking for opinions.

Some facts about me:

I am planning on keeping the car for 4 years, and then getting a new car.
I'm a pretty even driver. I normally take my time, and do not race other drivers.
Not planning any mods to the car.
Other than this oil change, I plan on changing my oil on the MB recommended mileage.

2002 C240 6-spd (ret)
I stopped by my dealer last night to pick up my "D rings" for my trunk net. I've got 5300 miles on my C240 and I've never been in for service. I discovered that I know one of the service writers who worked at another dealership where I bought a car. He has now been working for M-B for about 10 yrs. I stopped by and talked to him for awhile. I asked him about the oil question and he said it's fine to follow the FSS. He said that there are always some people who want early changes, some even every 3K miles. I'm sure my dealer would like my $$ to change the oil early, but, he told me not to worry -- the recommended oil changes should be fine.

If you’re only keeping the car 4 years, say 40-70K miles. Paying for any additional oil changes is throwing money away. I know several people who lease Accords and Toyota’s for 3y/36K miles and never do any oil changes or maintenance with no problems. The problems are given to the suckers who buy these un-maintained automobiles.

Proper Oil maintenance plays more to longevity then to anything else. My BMW is approaching 200K, and I feel the 3-5K oil changes and proper maintenance have a lot to do with that. So since my C230K is headed to my daughter and I am hoping for another 200K out of this car. I am doing the 1k and subsequent oil changes every 5K. For me it’s a small insurance premium to pay and piece of mind.
