c230k- FLATULENT! - Car and driver
Did you guys read the review of the new coupe in Car and Driver...they called our car flatulent, and completely ripped the 2.3 engine to shreds. The review went on to dis just about every aspect of our beloved vehicle. Grrrrrrr. makes me mad.

Let's not get our knickers in a knot... there are countless threads on this forum regarding the "agricultural" sounds of the 2.3L motor, especially on cold start-up.
"Flatulent" is actually a good word, because it's an educated term, and fewer people know it or how to use the word properly. In contrast, anyone who has passed the 2nd grade knows what a farm tractor sounds like.
Doubtless the editorial staff at C&D had to compare vocabularies among 6 different writers before they came up with "flatulent."

C230 Coupe 2002
Exhaust Note
Yes I agree the exhaust sound is bad but for money anyone can change the cat back system. Lots of systems out there and lots of custom exhaust companies out there that will build a new system with what ever degree of exhaust note you want. To bad that MB built a sport coupe without the sport sound! By the way, I did a test drive before I bought my Coupe and the only opinion that counts is mine since it was my money spent. I loved the car then and still do now!!!

C32AMG
You should hear
a C32 when it first fires up on a frosty morning. A lot of really good engines grumble a bit when first woken up.
As to the C/D review you're getting so tweaked about,if that's their only real complaint,it must be a pretty decent car.

"To bad that MB built a sport coupe without the sport sound!" think driving the C320 Coupe you will get some sound, and when you stand on it, sounds good, now wait unti I put some miles on it and get it burn in, in fact my C230 coupe, at 10k was sounding better than when new. Just like the 6 speed, all good things take time and get better. Think they should let every day drivers test the cars and compare, then at least you might get a honest evaluation.

Sporty sound, huh? I was going side by side with a Porsche 911 yesterday, and when he floored it, the sound was no better than what our coupe's supercharged M111 makes. I actually like the sound of the engine once it's revved up to 3000 RPM and higher. Especially with a big pulley which adds some S/C whine to it.

Hey cheer up folks, they mocked the engine sound, just imagine if they had the car for a year and had to deal with all the quality issues and electronical issues. I wonder what kind of words they would be using then

Ok lets not start this all over again please. u r one of the lucky ones out there. the odds of them finding problems with the car is really high. So many repeat issues and unresolved issues. U know this so stop pretending its not out there. there is a tech bulletin out there a mile long with issues.

anyways...... yah.... car and driver isn't very favorable with this car but the more i drive it.. the more i like it. perhaps they should allow an every day driver to test the vehicles. valid point there C230K....
