Problems with my manual transmission...

i use only amsoil products in my car, of course because i am an amsoil dealer.
disclaimer: i am an independent amsoil dealer, i am not trying to sell my product on this board. I DO NOT WORK FOR AMSOIL.
sorry had to do that since mods on this board get a little upset to easily.
like i stated earlier, if you replace the tranny fluid with synthetic atf the gearbox shifts so much better. here is the data sheet on the atf.

if you need any further info you will need to pm me.

yes i put 75-90 lube in the diff (AMSOIL) and i put syn ATF in the tranny (AMSOIL). overall i would say my tranny shifts extremely smooth. now i had a 2002 c230k and it shifted like hell until i replaced the fluid. my new c320 coupe shifted fairly well from the factory, but shifts like glass now.

My Saturn had 5W-30 motor oil in the gear box. Shifted great. Gear oil was useful years ago when companies didn't have precission gear grinding equipement, and bearings weren't as good as they are now. Now its just thick slop that sucks fuel.
Use the ATF. Hell, just try regular motor oil.

I just looked through the technical data sheet and there is nothing about the type/grade of fluid for the manual trans other than a MB part no. It doesn't say using ATF fuild either.
I also called a parts store and they tech said the type of fluid is very critical for modern transmissions and warned me of using any aftermarket fluid.
I'm worry that if I put in the aftermarket fluid it may be smooth for now, but a month or so down the road I might end up with a void warranty and a broken transmission...

na, it wont hurt it. i ran atf in my 2002 for a year and no probs. actually the atf idea was mb. this is what the tech told me they do and it is recommended on a tsb. i dont know, i never saw the tsb, but it worked.

If you're a dealer, ask them, I'm sure they'd like to tell you about it

Hey alevy:
Were you sure you bought 6 bottles of Royal Purple and only had 1.5 bottles left?? Because I'm just doing the fluid swap, but the thing already starts to flood out even before I finish the 2nd bottle! That means the manual trans' capacity is only 2 quarts...

Update:
I reread your post carefully, and I must misunderstood your meaning alevy. Did you mean you bought 6 litres and still had 1.5 litres left?? If so then that's about right.
Sorry! I'm so dumb... now I bought too many. :o Now who's insteredted in the Royal Purple Synchromax trans fluid? I have left over (brand new in sealed bottles) that can fullfill several orders! :p
Anyway, I just took a test drive. Boy ain't that smoooooth!! Although I still have problem shifting from neutral to 1st after a complete stop, it does glide through all other gears. No more gear grinding noise! If you live in the Bay Area, you're welcome to test my also pullied car - feel the difference!

i'm pyy116's friend. The dealer gave him back his car and said "nothing's wrong.. it's just the way it is"
let me tell him about this Royal Purple stuff..
The E46 M3's gearbox feels the same? I remember that an E34 M5 that I test drove had a horribly stiff gearbox.
The smoothest manual shifter I've tried was my friend's E46 325ci and some E36 BMW's. I had a 1992 230E (W124) that had a pretty horrible shifter too. It also needed a good amount of force to put into second gear but I just got used to it...

MB's tranys are notchy, which I like. Mine smoothed out at about 1000 miles. It shouldn't be hard to get into gear. If it is, it should be checked.

OK, bump because its already started...
I changed the tanny fluid on my 230 and 350 with royal purple syn 75w90 gear oil, and filled it to the 1.3L suggested on here to help with cold shifting.
On the 350 3rd is a huge fight to get into and its like you hit a wall with the shifter and push super hard.
In the 230 in 1st its the same fight. I was going to fill it to the 1.8 total, or whatver but the fluid gun makes it hard to determine how much is in there.
Can I simply fill it till it starts coming out the fill hole (we did this on my buddys 330ci and my discover Series II (all take the same fluid oddly) and they have no problems.
BTW there M272 V6s not the SC engine, I know the 6mt had some minor revisions to it. Any one else do their tranny fluid (manual with better results)
