Benefit of Extended Oil Draining Period For 5 Speed ATM 722.64.

Did my first MB ATM oil change yesterday at 4 years / 50,000 km. ( MB sheet suggests 3 year/50,000 km) Not a lot different from the Peugeots I have done over the years.

I write this to share the experience & benifit of leaving the auto transmission drain for an extended period to maximise the amount of oil drained. There is no torque convertor drain.

I checked the level on the dipstick( 25'C ) before hand & it seemed a little over filled . The filler cap tell tail was broken so the dealer mechanic must have topped it up after the rear gearbox seal was renewed during warranty.

I dropped the drain plug & after about an hour or so 3.375 litres had drained.

I left it draining over night ( 19 hours) & recovered a further 1.5 litres.

A further .75 litres was found in the pan when removed.( carefully!)

Oil retained in the filter was .125 L

Making a total of 5.75 litres drained.

I refilled using 5.75 but after obtaining running temp ( 80'C) found the level a little high as anticipated . I siphoned out .250 L from the dipstick tube to show a level at the high mark ( 80'C).

To summarize :- 1. 1.5 litres extra was drained if left for an extended period.Experts may be able to tell me if this oil came from the torque convertor?.

2. 5.5 litres of oil was required to fill the GB to the top of the 80' C mark . WIS states that approx 5 litres is required to fill the gearbox after draining !! . But they do not state how long to drain. Oil was still dripping from the drain after 19 hours.

3.Wis states that the GB holds a total of 7.5 litres including torque convertor therefore 73 % of the oil was changed.

4.If just draining from the drain plug & not removing the pan 62% of the oil would be drained.

I used Fuchs Titan AFT 4134 @ A$14.30 / Litre.( 20 litre box)

Transmission Dipstick from KTC Auto Tools USA $20 + $15 postage to Aus.

ATM oil filter A$30.31

ATM gasket A$32.34.

Lock pin A$ 2.20.

Total cost for changing ATM oil = A$ 143.50. ( excluding 2.5 L siphoned out & dipstick cost ) including the pleasure & experience gained doing so.

Good advice JC if one is not going to do a full flush procedure.
