Expert advice needed
I am after advice, I am going to buy Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon C220 CDI Elegance SE (04-07) 4dr 2005 (55) tomorrow and seeking for help. Can any one please advice me what to look in that car. any common faults etc?
thanks in advance
Try to speak with the previous owner about any problems & whether it has been maintained correctly. Get all the details.
Look at the service book for maintenance. If the Auto Gear Box has not been drained & filter changed every 60,000 km I would be disinclined to buy. Same with the engine oil change every 10 to 15000 km or yearly, fuel filter & air cleaneralso.
Try for a warranty.
I like to have a mechanic go over the vehicle on a hoist for oil leaks , mechanical & brake condition. See what maintenance needs to be done before you buy !. Our local motoring organisation has this service with a written report.A compentent MB independent mechanic to check would be a good move.
If you are from Sydney there is a MB tech here on this forum who may help named " Ausmbtech "
Do your homework, take your time & good luck.
defiantly a good hint to check for gearbox oil change. Will see tomorrow how good it is.
Thanks allot for your advice. One more question are there any other common things which usually do go wrong with this year merc?

A minor consideration is the TCU plug O rings on the transmission. Sometimes leak. It is an 8 buck part so not of major concern as long as you catch it early & oil does not wick up the wiring harness into the TCU under the passenger front kick plate. Also these cars are hard on Castor bushes - also cheap to replace.
EDIT - You might break the odd door pull!

As far as I am concerned they are both bullet proof as long as they are serviced correctly.
& are using the correct MB specified oils ie 229.51 for engine & 236.14 for ATM.
You do not mention how many Km the car has done or your location. ?
As previously mentioned ,it is worthwhile & may save some tears to have it checked by a professional .
Good luck tomorrow.
Let us know how you go.

Very pleased.
Definitely take it to a mechanic and prefer one that can connect it to STAR and see there were any codes since the last service + clear the codes and see if any pop back.
Drive the car for a few miles and see if the engine is smooth and tranny shifting correctly. If you can, try accelerating harder and see if there are stalls, chokes or stumbles (not the usual lag). Have someone rev the engine and look for smoke ...
Second hand car ... if you take the deal ... make sure to give her a full service. Filters, Fluids, Breaks, Pullies & Belts. You have no idea how she REALLY got treated or driven so investing in a complete service is a good starting point.
Hmmm ... A common thing would be ticking from within the dash when you start the AC (I have this and some of my friends have it too).
I saw many C200, C220 and C280 come to my mechanic with oil in the coolant tank. Check by sticking your finger (when the car is cold ... please) in the coolant tank and see if there's any oil on it.
Besides that ... you'll be happy. Very reliable car.
Not for rubber burning showoff kids. Wonderful cruiser with good mpg (or km/l ... dunno your location).

I will certainly follow your advice. If any one have any more advice after looking at above url then just reply I will keep checking this thread as i have another 4-5 hours left. Once again thanks for your support.
Look for good starting when cold, little to no smoke. check service history and if any injector have needed replacing ijn the past (unlikely). Most things are hidden on these so a simple "side of the road" check wont tell you much mechanically. Take it to a good local MB specialist for a pre purchase inspection. A good one is very trouble free vehicle.
