New strut at only 73k km ???

Noticing a banging noise this week on my 73,000k c class. I could not believe it was the struts with so little mileage, thought it may have been the jack in the trunk. Maybe could have come loose or something, nope.... On the highway it's fine, but around town going over potholes and the like there is a banging on the rear right hand side.

Is this normal for a 70k km C230? Also is it likely that the whole strut assembly needs replacing or are mounts a common fail for the W203?

How to check if its the mount?

thanks all

First Check the springs. Ive had broken coil springs causing clanging over bumps etc. All the salt we get on our roads in the winter causes corrosion and premature failure.

+1 - Strut failure on the rear is rare!

rears are fairly hardy on this car (btw there are no struts in the rear, it is multi link 5points each side and a standard style damper/shock) The Fronts on the other hand are the weakest link with almost everyone replacing the torque strut, lower ball joints, tie rods and other bushings, totally under engineered and many of the parts have been upgraded to a A204 number indicating that the original design/manufacturing was crap and under spec'd

Your problems could be as simple as a broken swaybar link...that would make a banging sound over bumps. Are your wheel bolts tight? a broken spring and even a broken exhaust mount will make a nasty banging

+1 - They are technically Shock Absorbers/Dampers on the rear.
