What is the point of the parking directional light if it only turns on when the key is out of the ignition? And also would that kill a battery quickly if left in for a few hours?

The intended use is when you park on the street, you can illuminate the side closer to the middle of the street so that people approaching could spot your car.
It shouldn't drain your battery if left on for a few hours. Depending on the condition of your battery, of course.
