Mercedes C200 Kompressor
Noise when aircon is switched on(URGENT HELP REQUIRED)
Hi everyone...my name is Joel from cape town South Africa, I own a C200 Kompressor, didn't know how expensive this car was to maintain until things started going wrong...
the most recent issue I have is when I switch on the AC and put the car into gear it sounds like the bearing and a gasket sound from the engine bay. I paid a visit to Mercedes Cape Town and the techy says it sounds like the alternator pulley that's shot. Can this be?
As soon as I put the aircon off this sound goes away. Can anyone please point me in the right direction.
Thx
Joel

It's likely either the alternator pulley or the AC compressor itself. The AC compressor is a swash plate compressor. Take off the Poly V belt & check both pulleys/assemblies for noise.
The tensioner pulleys can also fail but should make a noise all the time.
Good luck!

Mercedes C200 Kompressor
thank u
Hi Glyn,
Thank you very much for the reply and advice, much appreciated! Mercedes quoted me R3000 for the this job and after doing the timing chain 2 months ago this needs to be put on the back burner for now. Can this lead to a bigger problem though?
Thx Joel

I would not use the aircon until you know what is making the noise. If you damage the AC compressor you are in for R15,000. I suggest you go to Stanley Wilkinson if you are not keen to work on the car yourself.
