I may have broken something =( I need Help!
I may need some help in what i may have broken. CRAP!!
Well I am tuned w/ headers. For some reason, my car just stalled on me today in the middle of the street! I turned off the car and restarted it and started to hear a whining noise. When i accelerate harder, the whining noise INCREASES. What and where is this noise coming from?
thanks

Post a clip. It could be many things. Is it rev dependent? e.g. higher revs = more noise. Is it road speed dependent? faster = more noise. It could be anything from an accessory driven by the Poly V belt, to the excess air fan to a torque converter.

Sorry - The forum had a brief outage & I did not see your second post.
Please post & clip & read codes. Then we will get a clearer picture.
If it's pretty loud I would suspect torque converter. If less so might be a PS pump. A PS pump should not trigger any kind of limp reaction though.
Do the above & we can stop guessing. It might be a simple belt tensioner.

Torque converter bearing failure & transmission pump input shaft bearings & seals likely.
Let me find you another clip to listen to.

This was TC/Input shaft bearing failure & finally blew the seal out & spayed oil all over the place. Required new torque converter, bearings, seals etc.
Sound familiar?

I am trying to understand why we are having these TC failures on the 722.9. Have you been doing burnouts or donuts?
I will not be judgemental if you have. I have broken many motor cars myself over my lifespan.

oooo my.... Here we go again. Reminds me of my transmission issue.
Sorry to say buddy, I am so sure you have the same problem like me.
Need a new TC change. I think I have a post of this and Glyn had nailed it with his posting of another car's sound. 100% same. Get ready to drop $3500+ for the fix.
Labor is expensive. They have to drop the transmission to get to the part. Since you are at it, mind as well consider changing out the TCU too. I am sure sooner or later it will end up needing replace. Grand total for this fix would run you somewhere $5000+
Sorry to break the bad news as I had already ran into this wall already.

As for me Glyn, I had inherit the issue of the TC issue. The previous owner was a lady owner. I had to say a fine lady and probably that was where I let my guard down and bought the car hence inheriting the problem. Well, I was naive.
The TCU issue was also probably inherit. I don't drive my car hard and had owned it for like 2 months with 70k when it was transfer to me. Car was driven only on weekends and at short trips.
Here's what I suspect. I have a feeling the previous owner have driven the car on trips while it snowed. Why I guess, the tires was beat up with holes on it and it looks like tire chains was put on. Good thing there was no accident on the tire chain. I had seen a lot of broken chain where it beats up the tire well and fender. Perhaps this might have an impact on the transmission, where when the tires slips it creates too much tranmission wear and tear. But then again, I am just speculating.

oooo... If you have warranty, bring it in and let them fix it.
Or it will and may cost you a leg.

Haha. Not as scary with the balance shaft / sprocket issue in the near future.
Since I have went through with the TC issue, its not that bad other than taking one of my leg, especially my warranty is no where in sight. I have the TCU issue now and that might take out my other leg. Hmzz..., maybe i'll give an ARM instead since I still need the other leg to drive.

I went to the dealer and what they tell me is, I need a new transmission, torque converter, pump . Something like that and it total came out to $7460 + tax only for the tranny!! OH MY LORD!! but I do have extended warranty and I would want everything replaced brand spanking new!
my only worry is that I have a tune and a header =/ i hope this doesn't affect anything.

I wonder why they want to replace the whole transmission. At worse it's usually just TC, Bearings, Seals - sometimes the shaft & pump.
Maybe wear debris has got into the rest of the tranny & damaged everything.
I'm so pleased you have a warranty. If you did not I would have advised a second opinion on the necessity to replace everything.
Good luck!

Headers can't cause transmission failure & just keep quiet about the ECU.
This is why I ask people to look after their 722.9 transmissions & service every 39K miles. She is one expensive SOB to work on. Half the value of some US cars in your deflated pricing market.

That puts it around $8,000. If you did $8,000 of collision damage to an 07 C230 the insurance company would likely cut their losses. It's a good thing he has warranty, though it sounds like they may try to get out of paying.

Sorry I missed this earlier. Glyn pointed me here. Another pump failure on the 722.9? This is getting scary. Still don't understand why they are saying you need a new transmission Especially considering it just started whining.
Most important questions I have for you:
1)What is your mileage?
2)What service(s) have been done to the transmission and when?

Yes John - 04mbc230 & aigooalex in the last few weeks. I am similarly puzzled. The 722.9 uses the same pump as the 722.6. There is not a hell of a lot to fail. It was redesigned for quieter operation by flow benching the inlet. This new version of the pump is installed in latest generation 722.6 in the diesels etc. The eccentric gear is now hardened alumimium for weight saving which might make it more service sensitive. I almost think that TC bearings fail first & damage the pump & seals?? Not clear to me yet! Have you ever heard of pump failure on a 722.6? I have not.
EDIT: This seems to be becoming an epidemic. kluvsbenz possibly has the same condition - not yet confirmed.
aigooalex please give us your mileage & service history.

I have been scouring the web for 722.9 info for several months, mostly about the conductor plate issue, but recall seeing a few ramblings about pump failures. I read that it is the pump that causes the issue, but you may be right Glyn that the input bearing may be the culprit and that in turn takes out the pump.
Unfortunately the dealers rarely do any kind of failure analysis. They just replace the affected parts and call it a day. But, this does have me nervous with possibly the 3rd case of this failure on the forum.
Aigooalex, please try and get some pics and probe the tech working on your car and see if we can get to the bottom of the cause.
