broken engine cover
broken engine cover
broke my engine cover, long story, also just broke my wallet, frivolous purchases last week, so my question, any foreseeable issues with normal driving without engine cover for a few weeks?

My stealership service dept. told me that not correctly putting on the engine cover of my wife's '06 C230 caused it to throw a CEL. I don't know if the '05 works the same way.

To quote from the repair invoice:
"53857 Aftermarket repairs. Road test car for complaint. Connect battery charger for diagnosis. Perform short test. Found codes 0750, 2096, 0746, 2092 in ME9.7 systems. Test individual components with faults. Found air cleaner not properly seated to air mass sensor. Tested air mass sensor = passed. Inspect other components. Found spark plugs just replaced by aftermarket shop. Found the aftermarket shop did not secure air cleaner properly, and cause check engine light. This is not covered by MB warranty. Reset engine adaptations. Perform test program after short test = no codes. C2.0P."
That is all I know about it - other than it hasn't come back.

The car should throw a code if you leave the airbox cover open... However, if you simply leave the engine cover off you'll be fine. It doesn't shock me at all that the dealer was unaware of this, though. Did they top up your blinker fluid?

There should be no issues with the M271 engine as far as driving without an engine cover goes. I drove without mine for some time, its just a plastic cover for looks. Sort of cheap on the tabs that hold it in place as well as it brakes easily.
you just lost 100 HP by damaging your engine cover! j/j
Mine is broke . I dont even have mine on. The MB Dealership broke it last time I went in for a recall. Those plastic get old and brittle from the heat of the engine. Overtime it will break.
The bad news is.. THEY DON"T MAKE REPLACEMENTS... you will have to search very hard for a replacement ebay or europe ebay. Saw 1 on ebay once. He wanted 150 bucks for his... blaaah.. I'll just drive naked under the hood.

Yes they do. When I bought my w203 a year ago it had a broken engine cover, I bought a replacement at the dealer. The replacement was actually much nicer, they updated the part a bit. The plastic is thicker/more robust and it's simple black with a silver star on top.
do you recall how much it was? I'll buy one if it's cheap enough, but I really only pop my hood for work, not show.
I guess that's not too bad, I would rather buy some new floor mats with that money, but we'll see. I'm almost tempted to try and make my own, my buddy does custom fiberglass work, I was going to ask him about making a custom air intake anyway.
