Any experience with Michelin Pilot Supersports?

It's time to think about summer tires that I'll have to buy next month. I currently have Goodyear Asymmetrics, and want to switch them out, since the rears are bald (it seems like I'm always swapping out tires for some reason). Tirerack's got the Supersports at #1 in their rankings since they came out last year, and was wondering if anyone's running with them. On their review, they talk about them being a bit harsh on commuting, which would be my biggest use, but would also like some sport driving in there too.

I have the michelin piolt sports on my stock sport wheels. I haven't really seen much of a problem with them. The front ones die pretty fast but thats a common issue with our cars I think. Other then that its a pretty good tire in my opinion. good luck!

I'm also interested Tommy because sooner or later I guess PS2's - my present favourite will not be available

Michelins are very expensive. You should check out the Contientals DWS they are an all season ultra high performance that handles pretty well. You should check out the DWS's before considering just buying a summer time.. I know your in NJ and didnt get much snow this year but it will come! and the DWS handle great in any condition

Couple of things - have dedicated snows on my C7 OEM rims, so no need for all-seasons, and peydidy, you're referring to the standard pilots, as far as I can tell - I'm referring to the newer, higher-performance Supersports. Thanks for responding, though.

Glyn, your post makes me think of Woody Harrelson's character in Zombieland, tracking down the last Twinkies on the planet. PS2's are still showing up on Tirerack, I wonder how rare they are now.

The Supersports in my staggered 18" size are 940-ish, which isn't that bad for basically a brand-new design.

SS's are great. I use these on a different car in staggered. Another friendly racer commented that they are similar to his Hoosiers when used with a slightly less aggressive alignment. They are progressive and talkative at the edge and let you know. I consider them between PS2s and SportCups but cheaper than either of them.

Thanks Andy - good info.

The Michelin summer tyres are way superior to the DWS. & Conti summer tyres are crap.

There’s no better tire for ~50°+ Fahrenheit road-going enthusiasts IMHO.

Never mind you’ll likely be shopping for a fresh set every 10,000 miles (track days excluded). Those alleged “being a bit harsh” reviews are nonsense.
That’s a result of my lunatic fringe aftermarket suspension's damping and wheel rates. :)

Another upside is that they are actually less expensive than Michelin’s renowned PS2.

Pilot supersports are great tires but are way overpriced and wear out quickly, there are many better alternatives that provide 95% of the performance of PS2 for 50% of the cost. I think it is an overkill for our type of car, if you are running a 911 or Ferrari or any extreme performance car then I say sure.

Continental DW (not the DWS) has received excellent reviews and test results even though Glyn does not think highly of that manufacturer

I have no problem with Conti DW, DWS. My problem lies with the Sport Contact range. They are a lousy tire on a Benz chassis. Noisy & rough, get worse with wear, crap turn in, poor side walls that develop lumps.

Thanks splinter. They will be my next tyre once PS2's wear out.

They appear a natural progression of Exalto PE2, PS2 - similar construction & tread so they should be nice & quiet.

There are 3 things I won't compromise on. Tyres, Brakes, Dampers.

Interesting... My front tires last much longer than my rears. Admittedly that experience comes from using Sumitomos. The rears wore out in about 10K miles but the fronts had plenty of tread. I'm using Continental DWS now and they wear a whole lot better. I don't know if I'll see the same pattern.

Its weird, back when my car used to be my dads his rears would always die before the fronts. When I got the car by fronts when out before my rears. They have always had Pilot sports on them too.

Town cars wear fronts quicker due to braking. Open road cars wear rears quicker. A lot depends on operation, pressures & driving style.

Exactly. I’m typically thrifty and economize on other unimportant expenditures in order to more fully enjoy my hobbies.

Are there less costly ‘round and black’ tires available? Of course.
Purely coincidental a good friend owns the local Michelin store. First set he ever installed went to yours truly.
The PSS may be “overkill,” although they’re an easily justified consumables expense by my budgeting.
They make their presence known every mile behind the wheel.

Buy the best and cry once.

OMG - one of my witty friends saw our posts & sent an e mail - retorting.

Many thanks for the 10% of the reply information that was on point.

I'm on the SS bandwagon now (not the German one), so I'll be getting these on probably the third week of March or so. I'm sure there's a chance that they are overkill for my car, but then again, better overkill than underkill.

My car wears out 4 at a time. Shoulders of the fronts, centers of the rears. No matter how the pressures are set, perfect alignment, that's just the way it does. Johnand said his car wears tires the same way, though I think he does lots of highway driving which would explain the rears being shot first. I do a lot of back road driving so my fronts get the shoulders worn just as quickly as the rears.

I rotate side to side to cut down on this but it ultimately doesn't stop it.

I take that back - they're now $1,014. Hmmm, may have to re-think. Yes, it's only a $70 jump in price for all four to stick with the Super Sports, but that annoys me regardless.

For example, Bridgestone Potenza S-04s are $930.

That recent price adjustment not coincidentally covers the cost of Michelin’s $70 “Value Reward Card.”

Strong on basic accounting principles, I’ve never been a fan of marketing chicanery.
Of course, not every eligible purchaser will redeem the offer...

LOL, thanks for noticing. I glossed right over that.

Hmmm, it's through Feb. 26th. Wanna guess how much the Tirerack's prices on those tires will drop by on Feb. 27th?

I now run a Michelin Sport up front, and a harder/longer wearing Michelin in the back. I will have to look up what the model is in the rear, but I have some 25k miles on them, and can't believe how much tread I still have.
