Can you be more specific?
How is the exhaust heat shield make thumbing noises? I have them too and I have had them since day 1. I noticed that it happens when stopped (I guess the shield is cooling off, contracting ) after the car has been ran hard (shield probably got too hot ).
Thanks
CZ
p.s. Did you figure it out yourself? Was it replaced or tightened up?

i did not figure it out myself. i thought the problem was with the rear left wheel. they tech came and tested the wheel out and did not figure it out. so they gave me a loaner while he wanted to run some extensive tests. the sheet they gave me said "heat shield exhaust system repair" and does not indicate whether it was replaced or tightened.
i do not thinking it had to do with running the car too hard since it always did it since starting the engine and going over the bump in our driveway. something must of hit it and loosin it up a bit to act up against the bottom of the car. the thumping only came while driving over small bumps and larger, not at a stop like yours.
i'll ask them when i take our other benz in for service A exactly what they did.

Wow, honestly I never thought it was a problem. I just assumed it was a pump or something. Guess I'll have the dealer look at it.

I'm glad that someone started this thread. I just got my car back today and my SA cannot duplicate my complaint with the thumping coming from the rear when the car is at a full stop. It sounds like someone is knocking from the inside of your trunk. Then I realized that this could be some back pressure issues with the exhaust and sure enough my tech said that there are some 06's coming in with the same complaints. He went on to explain that MB released a new engine software update to correct this problem that has some relation to the confliction in climate. Will be seeing them soon.

I took my car in again for this issue and they swear up and down that they fixed the problem but it's still there. I'm down in Miami and at my dealership they only had this issue with 2 other cars. I don't think they're too motivated to get to the root of the problem.

My car also has the "thumping" noise from the exhaust; there is also a "shrilly metallic-ky" sound that seems to come from the exhaust when I'm either parked or when the car is at a red light idling. The thumping noise can only be heard when I'm inside the car; the metalli-ky shrill sound can be heard when I'm outside the car, standing by the exhaust.
Does this happen to a lot of people, or are we just an unlucky bunch?

Just a little update guys; I took my car to Park Place MB in Dallas, and the service I received was as expected.
I called in for two things:
1.) Passenger side outside mirror clear corner turn signals build up moisture and fog up during rain. Drivers side do not fog up.
2.) Exhaust makes metallic-ky "leaky air" sound when idling.
Park Place MB's diagnosis for both defects/issues:
Both issues fall within factory specs.
Are you F-ING KIDDING ME???????? It's normal for the passenger turn signal to FOG up when it rains, and it's NORMAL for my exhaust to sound like it's LEAKING?
It's BS like this that will deter me from ever buying MB again.

I was informed all mercedes make that thumping sound and it's due to emissions. I don't think I'll be buying another benz ever. It didn't make the sound when I bought the car, it shouldn't be making it now. I own 2 mercedes right now and I will be selling them both soon due to the poor service on this issue.

Jackass. Seriously, what happened to what was once "World-Class Service"?
I used to get treated better at my Honda dealership! I didn't expect such rude and vile treatment from MB.
I wonder if BMW service is this bad too........

My 03 C230K has been thumping since day 1 when purchased new
They tested the heat shield, no problem there. They claim it's the fact that we have 2 fuel pumps, and 2 tanks. The pumps move fuel from 1 tank to the other to balance the car weight. That's probably BS but that's what I was told. Supposedly the pumps make the thumping noise. Weird thing is the thumping only happens when stopped NEVER while moving.

I've been noticing this sort of thumping noise lately as well.
I have a 2 year old C 230K (2005) and the only time I hear the noise is when I'm stopped at a light.
Strangely it doesn't always happen either.
Will mention it to my service adviser the next time I have the car in, to see what they say, as at this point I'm not overly concerned by it.
