C220W w203 Diesel Particulate Filter problems

Hi there, I have been a silent reader for a while and this forum is just amazing.

Last year my car went into limp mode so I have taken it to the mechanic (indie) who diagnosed a faulty inlet manifold (using fault codes) he checked and cleaned the egr and stated that the manifold needs replacing.
The car acceleration was not too bad so I continued to drive it (with engine mangement light on) for almost a year (big mistake).
Last week I purchased a new manifold and took the car to the same mechanic, before starting any work the mechanic checked the car for error codes and stated that the diesel particulate filter is blocked and it may or may not regenerate after fixing the manifold.

He replaced the manifold and the old one looked ok, all flaps are intact but one of the channels had build up of soot suggesting that the channel is leaking air.

Anyways, the engine management light came on again and car does not rev above 3000rpm, I took the car on the motorway to try to force regeneration but this failed despite a 40mile round trip on high rpm.

I bought a particulate filter (not original) and tomorrow I will be taking it to the mechanic to get it changed. I was wondering if this is the best solution:
1- Would the dpf regenerate when engine management light is on? or do I have to clear the error before attempting to passive regenerate.
2- What would be the cause of dpf failure: driving on faulty manifold, or due to short distance travel?

I was wondering if I am rushing into changing the dpf and whether or not I should check the sensors first.

Any suggestions

Good questions, but so few diesels on this forum since MB decided not to sell them

That's true, the CDI's are mainly in europe...because gas is a lot more expensive than diesel
