Camshafts - Which one is what?
Started out with a simple timing chain and adjuster replacement only to find that the gear on the right side when looking at the motor from end on has several teeth that are worn badly.
This is the gear that has E marked on it, is that the EXHAUST while the A marked gear is the INTAKE?
Thanks in advance, still trying to find the best price on a replacement, but want to make sure I order the correct one!

Thanks Jetta, I actually found this other post that had a WIS document. You are correct, passenger side is exhaust and drivers side is intake. pretty much makes sense given where the exhaust manifold is located!

Its a 2005 with 85k miles on it. I actually got the car about a month ago and had some time off from work and thought I would do a little maintenance on it. I heard the slight noise at startup and right away suspected the timing chain.
Dealers was around $900 for a single camshaft gear!!! I have found a few online places with the OEM part for $680 range so I will be making calls to them.

It's early for a chain replacement, but since you're going to be working in that area, it might be a good idea to go ahead and change it so you don't have to worry about it for a LONG time.

No idea, but I can say that I am not a happy camper about it. When I pulled the valve cover, the timing chain looked like it was in pretty good shape and I thought about not replacing it. Since I had the parts already I thought I better do it. Guess that was a good decision given the only way to know that the teeth were worn down was to have the chain off.
Locating the cam gear has proven to be a challenge, appears to only be a dealer item and has to be ordered from MB direct with none of the 3 local dealers near me stocking it.

Getmercedesparts.com has them for $637.50 each. I can't understand why they cost so damn much. Can you post up pics of what it looks like?

Is this the part number? It shows as the "adjuster" that so many people had problems with. My car had both replaced in 2009 due to rattling.

That crazy money for a gear.
I have a leaking head gasket on the #4 cylinder which is common for M111.
While I have all the parts, it's probably less expensive to just swap the whole engine.
Ideally, get a wrecked 2002 Blue coupe, swap the engine and trans, and the rear hatch which is damaged for like 2 grand. I saw a complete engine on ebay with 6?K miles for like 1200.
Meanwhile I just keep driving it.

Great info! Curious was the timing chain install pretty straight forward? Did you have to pull the new timing chain in by rotating the crank shaft or the cam shaft? Any special tools needed to keep the timing chain in place while you draw the new one in?

Racer8x,
When you rotate your chain by hand to make sure it makes a complete rotation does it happen to jump at that right cam teeth? I'm stuck on that part putting things back on. I do notice on mine that the teeth are worn as well *driver side* I had to rebuild my block from valves to new adjuster and chain.
