There are actually four cup holders in an '05 C230. One: pops up and swings over to the passenger side of the console, two: the place where it used to be, and two more in the pull out section in the middle of the back seat (pull the center of the seat back down and push toward the rear on the black plastic piece and they pop forward).

Yep, there are four.. I also use the door pockets for bottled drinks. They hold bottles of water or similar upright perfectly.

There's this big, bookish thing you get when you purchase your car, full of pictures and words and things. It's full of fascinating stuff!!

Burned titanium door panels would be cool.

That's the problem with the cup holder in the console. If I have a cup, I pop up the cup holder and swing it to the passenger side so I can shift easier.

Passenger with a free hand?

This car evidently wasn't designed for the heavy drinker (as opposed to our Toyota Sienna which has I think 14 cup holders scattered throughout the cabin). I have an auto trans and I still find it annoying when I put a tall coffee thermos in the console. The swing-out cup holder, maybe an innovative mechanism but isn't very ergonomic and I use it only when absolutely needed.

Speaking of peeling chrome, has anyone found a place to get the chrome trim ring separate from the entire assembly? I painted mine black but would like the chrome back if possible, without shelling out $85 for a new unit.

A wrecker, local junkyard, or ebay would be the only viable options. Try Potomac; I've had very good success with trim pieces from them.

I have accepted the fate of the cupholder. My first one was replaced under warranty due to the flaky chrome, the second one is now missing half the chrome. Also the vent tab on the furthest passenger vent has suffered some chrome flake. Damn age.

You can still open it and use the cup holders correct? I liked the slide cover on the 04 C240! Very classy!
