C200 CDi REvving

Hi all, i have a 2004 c200 Cdi. I was recently driving at approximately 100mph, i then put the gear into neutral(manual) then the car just starting revving by itself. I then pulled over but the car still was revving (alot of smoke coming out from exhaust and some from the engine)by itself even thought i removed the key from the ignition and i turned the car off, after about 5secs this stopped and then alot of fluids was coming out from the bottom of the engine. Now the car will not start as the engine will not turn over.

Please could someone help as i do not know the problem, i have searched the forum and saw a few posts similar to mine stating a turbo problem?

Thanks

The only way a diesel engine can run away is to be given fuel. So either something stuck open on the fuel injection system or the turbo blew an oil seal and the engine ran away on sump oil until that ran out & seized.

You need to take the car to a dealer or an Indy and have the problem diagnosed if you are not a technical person. Smoke is likely because the engine could not combust the sump oil well. It has a very low cetane number. i.e it will not auto ignite as well as diesel.

The only way we can help here is if you investigate properly & report what you find. You might wish to get hold of an OBDII scanner & read stored codes. That might give us an indication of what failed.

Try to identify what fluid is coming out of the engine & from where.

Good luck

Thinking aloud, the engine has gone from high revs /high load to low revs & low load in a very short period of time when you selected neutral.

As Glyn rightly says something may have stuck open i.e. fuel pump rack or fuel sourced from lube oil seals

I also wonder whether you inadvertantly over revved the engine when putting it into neutral as your foot would have been hard on the throttle. This may have caused turbo overspeed & catastrophic failure. It happens with ships engines when the prop comes out of the water in a sea & the govenor does not catch it quickly enough.

This is scary stuff . I have seen photos of marine diesels with turbo bearing oil fueling them & being completely destroyed with dire risk to all nearby with rods poking out of blocks & entablatures.

How many miles has the car done & has the engine had any major repairs?

I would be very grateful to know the cause & outcome.

Yes JC ~ The picture I had in mind when he said fluid dripping from below the engine was a foot out of bed (conrod through the block).

thanks for you replies. i got it checked out by a few mechanics and one said it was due to too much engine oil, while the other said it was due to a catalytic part. tbh i may just sell the car or buy a new engine as the car hasnt been used for 6months or so.
