Noise on Engine Start up
I have a 05 C230 with 110,000 miles.
From last week, whenever I start the car, the engine starts with a weird noise.
It has never happened before. Anyone knows what the problem is?![Confused](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
I uploaded the video of the car starting up. The noise starts at 0:04.
Thank you in advance.![bow](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/bowdown.gif)

The clip is too short to tell. Does the noise go away once the oil pressure comes up? If so you need a new timing chain.

Basically, you try turning the pulley quickly in either direction and check that it locks (and turns the alternator rotor) in one direction but spins freely the other. Freely is open for interpretation, but it shouldn't be solid in both directions. I should add that this method requires removing the serpentine belt.
Another method, if you have a long T55 torx bit, you can remove the plastic lid from the pulley, insert the T55 into the grip in the alternator axle and try turning. IIRC counter clockwise should lock against the belt and clockwise should spin the generator rotor with the belt not moving.

if it sounds like metal chain hitting metal...then u need a timing chain
ticking noise could be a bunch of stuff (purge valve, fuel injectors, or the lifters)
but going to the dealer is like going to an oil change place...i know plenty of people that get hired at the dealerships right out of technical school
(audi) is guilty
