Coolant leak 2000/2001 C220 cdi

Hi people.

I have recently bought my first MB a 2000/2001 c220cdi and after just a week i have found out i have a coolant leak

I have been looking over the different hoses and i think/hope i have pinpointed the problem.

On the expansion tank for the cooling system there are mounted 2 electronic thingies ( yeah...i dont know what their called since they are not even in haynes rep books ^^) Although one of them wich has a thin hose going down and under the left hand side of the motor has a part number A 000 545 05 271..the thin hose that goes from the part with this number seems to be leaking somewhere on the way down to where it is fitted on the bottom of the motor.

I have tried searching google for the part number but that spesific number simply does not show up anywhere.

I was hoping someone here would be able to help me find out what part this is and what number the hose i need has.

On top of the electronic (pump?) with the part number A 000 545 05 271 it also says VAC where a thin hose goes and OUT where the hose in question comes fitted.

In advance thnx

Lasse.

In addition to the above there should be an axilliary heating pump that feeds the heater/aircon (HVAC) unit in the car when the engine is not running.

Your "A 000 545 05 271" is NOT a valid part number. Mercedes-Benz part numbers usually have the following format A###-###-##-## (sometimes followed by more numbers to denote more specific colour or trim for that particular part).

Better to post a photo of the part instead of trying to describe it as there are thousands of parts all over the engine bay.

A good place to research part number is www.mbpartsworld.com (no affiliation to mbworld.org) where you get the basically the same info that the parts department of the Mercedes-Benz dealership would have.

The electronic thingy coming from the bottom of the coolant expansion tank is the coolant level sensor.

Yes i think this one is for the auxillary heating pump since i do have a heater system to keep the car warm up to 30 minutes after the motor has been shut down.

From the sketch(not good in english) or drawing u post i am missing the part i am talking about. the other one on ur sketch is there but my part with the hose that has an apparant leak is missing from it so i guess that is the auxillary heating pump mechanism.

And to Sunny..i know the part number does not exist since ive been using google and every other search mechanism i could think of ( im from norway and even here nobody can find the part.

The funny thing is the part number is stamped on the heating pump in clear letters so it IS a correct part number

The thing for me now is to find out where to get the hose from that pump down to the engine and if this hose is just something i can pull loose and exchange....i never thought an auxillary heating system could keep draining my coolant fluid alone but it seems that is the case.

on image 2 it is the hose with the small yellow band around it that probably has a leak down by the engine. on picture 1 u see the same hose and it seems the final 4CM or so has a leak bfore the 90 degree angle up and attatching to the engine block.

I`ve never seen that part before. That is obviously a rare part. You will likely need to do to your local dealer for that part,... the electronic pump. But it seems that you only have a leak in the hose that attaches to it. There doesn`t seem to be anything special about that hose, in terms of its shape. If you can`t get the hose from the MB dealership, I would suggest using a generic hose from an automotive parts store. You need to measure the ID (inner diameter) and OD (outer diameter),... ID is most important and figure out the length,.... and any hose clamps needed. Should be rather simple to change yourself,... you might have to use a clamp to clamp off any coolant upstream from this hose so you`ll minimize coolant lost,.... or just do it as part of a coolant change.

FYI,... that fist size metal cylinder beside it with the wires sticking out from the top is the auxilary coolant pump to pump coolant to the interior of the car.

It is also possible that your car is fitted with an engine heated screen washer system or A fuel heater for very cold climates.

Yeah it is not the engine heated screen washer system since that one here in norway is fueled by the screen washer liquid and not the coolant..but a fuel heater. On my car wich is the diesel it does not have a pre heating diesel system for some odd reason but it DOES have a diesel heating system for when the engine is off to reserve some of the heated fluids to keep the car warm by using the power from the battery for up to 30min or how long the battery might last without emptying it to keep the car warm.

Now the weird part even here in europe and on every mercedes part list i have been able to find the pump/electrical item the hose is connected to does not exist on any part site i have been able to find. Even the mercedes benz national club im a member of have been able to find the correct part anywhere wich is just seriously weird ;D

Even the latest heating circuit u posted glyn does not correspond with the one attached to my cooling expansion tank...No matter i will meassure the hose and find a corresponding one but the part that not in the US or here in Europe nobody can seem to find this part even in MB's own part list is pretty weird!

It's quite possible that particular hose does not have an official MB part# if it is only sold as part of a package with the electrical pump up above it. There are a number of small MB parts like that,.... for example the o-rings for the transmission pilot bushing adapter (electrical plug), it used to have its own separate MB part number and could be brought separately. But now you can only get that o-ring when you buy the transmission pilot bushing adapter which includes the o-ring as a package.

Anyways, if you are really fussy about getting the exact hose,.. inquire at your local Mercedes Benz dealership part department,.... the worst that can happen is that you get hosed!

Do you have OM646 or OM611 engine? Both in C220CDi

I have the 611 engine. My problem is now solved!

I took it to the MB dealer garage...they spent half a day scratching their heads trying to find out about this but finally they did!

The hose is changed and the car is back in action..

Unfortunatly the snow and cold has arrived so ill have to just dream all winter off what else i can do with the car next spring.

Thnx alot for trying to help me out.
