2005 C230 Sport Kompressor (manual transmission)
Seat Heater burn-through

Just had to follow up on my earlier post... MB of Alexandria was outstanding. They fixed the car, gave me a loaner for the duration, and paid for my jacket - no questions asked. Could not have asked for a better response from MB.

They said that although this is rare, they do see 10-12 cases a year where this happens....

10 to 12 cases a year!!!

That sounds like a lot, especially for Virginia and especially for the failure mode - your seat catches on fire while you're driving it!

I wonder if this failure is common to all cars with heated seats. If so, it reminds me a bit of the problem Audi had in the early '90s with their auto transmission. The media caught on to it and blew it up out of proportion. Road and Track analyzed the cases of similar automatic transmission failure in all cars. It turns out it was a constant for all makes - including Audi - until their complaints spiked with the press coverage. I bet if this got a lot of press coverage we'd see the same thing.

This does happen on other brands. I had an 02 VW Jetta before my coupe and had the drivers left bolster burn through 3 times. It got to the point where they couldn't figure out the problem and the recall campaign called for disconnecting the bolsters on the drivers seat. Over on vw vortex we basically figured that it was due to the wires getting bent back and forth to the point of failure since obviously the drivers seat sees the most use.

It doesn't surprise me about VW.. VW owners should be thankful each day that their cars have not burned to the ground.

It is surprising about Benz. I didn't have heated seats in my 2005 but I do in my 2011 and hopefully they've figured this thing out. lol
